Eczema Issues - Ugh!

I have been researching and researching Eczema and there's too many maybes out there!  My LO has it on his face and he scratches all the time and makes himself bleed.  Lately it's even around his eyes.  He touches his face and sucks his thumb, so I'm sure that's not helping.  I have trimmed his nails, used Eczema creams, Aquaphor... etc.  My question is, is this really due to an allergy??  Some sites say yes, some say no.  My pedi thinks it's just an infant thing since it's only on his face and not on the body.  I am using fragrance free everything and he's only drinking formula right now.  So I don't think it's related to that.  He had formula earlier on and no eczema.  Does anyone have any good advice on this?  Just seems like there's too much info out there and no real answers.  I'm not sure what to do.  I just hate that he's itching and I don't even really know what will work on his face.  So scared to use a steroid cream considering all the comments on how bad it is.

Re: Eczema Issues - Ugh!

  • I use Mustela face cream and Aveno lavender lotion on my girl and it cleared it all up, especially her face:)

  • Sorry, Mustela face cream, not Medela:)
  • DD has eczema as well. It got to be pretty bad at one point. My doctor said it was likely due to the cold weather outside and the heat running. My son had same issue and it only came about when the weather got colder. Anyway, Aveeno Baby Eczema cream worked wonders for DD. Didn't even have to go the hydrocortisone route although I would've done so if it continued.
  • Can you take him to a dermatologist? They do make non-steroid creams that might work for him. (You aren't supposed to used steroid creams on your face anyways because they thin your skin and the skin on your face isn't very thick to begin with.)

  • My pedi also recommended the Aveno cream, but it made my LO's eczema worse.  I'm using a lotion called CeraVe now and it seems to work.  We also put a humidifier in his room.  He still gets a break out here and there...but it's under control for the most part.

They never mentioned to me that it could be an allergy.

  • It's not an allergy thing from what I understand.  DH and I both have it, so we know how much it sucks!  Pedi suggested we use Hydrocortisone on trouble spots as needed, but not everyday.  After that, just use Aveeno Eczema cream everyday to moisturize.  My pedi suggested that we use creams instead of "lotions" b/c lotions are typically alcohol based and that can be very drying to the skin.

Bonus - the hydrosortisone also cleared up DS's cradle cap after 1 application!  His head and face look soooooo much better!

  • For my daughter I had to used the prescribed steroid creams.  The itching was unbearable for her.  She would scratch until she bled and her skin looked really bad all over.  So, my pediatrician prescribed the 2.5% hydrocortisone for her face, another cream for her body and she prescribed an antibiotic because the eczema patches had become infected.  My husband is a pediatrician and was not happy, but something had to be done.  She looks 100 times better and feels better.  She wakes up now happy and playing.  Also, we were doing nutramigen during the day and soy formula at night, and we were adding the gerber rice cereal to her bottle.  Our pediatrician told us that she can't have any milk products to include the soy.  She said to try the nutramigen for now, but if she is still itching (which she is) we have to switch to one of the amino acid based formulas.  And, we can't use the Gerber rice cereal, but the Beech Nut.  As I said, my daughter is 100 times better.  I use very little of the prescribed creams then I layer her with aquaphor after that.  Oh, the Aveeno Eczema cream was no good for my daugher - she ended up breaking out so I had to stop using that on her.  The Aveeno Eczema bath therapy is pretty good at stopping the itching, so I would say try that.  Sometimes people will say not to bathe babies with eczema often, but with my daughter, I find that frequent baths do help her skin and it gives her some relief from the itching.  But with the meds, it is like she is a whole new baby!

  • DS1 has eczema... started at a few months old- he would scratch until he bled... we would have to put him in sleepers for naps and bed time... mitts on his hands.  The summer would be the same way- even in the car after the beach or pool- pants, sweater, mitts... it was HORRIBLE!!!

We brought him to the allergist- even though no one in our family has allergies... and turns out he is allergic to EGGS.  No respiratory issues, thank God- but has a skin reaction.  Less than 3 days after removing egg products from his diet, his skin was practically clear!!

He still has flare-ups from time to time (weather or if food may have touched egg or something)- but we have memedosone (sp?) steroid ointment for the flare-ups....

  • DS has eczema. It showed up at 4 weeks. Then, after doing some research, I decided to cut out dairy to see if that would do anything. Sure enough as soon as I cut out dairy his skin improved drastically. Maybe try switching to a non-dairy formula would help?

  • I have ezcema and I get outbreaks when I'm stressed. I use hydrocortizone and humidifier at night and it clears it up. I just noticed it with DS a few days ago on his back. I am adding baby oil to his bath water and using aquaphor on his back. Its not gone yet but it seems to have helped.
