Baby Proofing overload!

What is needed to baby proof your house?  Like, I don't think I'm going to do the corner bumpers and things like that, but what is a necessity to you?  I was standing in the baby safety aisle in BRU this afternoon and found myself to be completely overwhelmed and under prepared!!

Re: Baby Proofing overload!

  • All we have are outlet plugs and a gate at the bottom of the stairs (the kids don't go upstairs for anything other than sleeping so a top gate is not needed). Our kitchen is open to the living room and play area and we do not have cabinet locks. Chemicals are kept in the garage.

Anything from the waist down that is breakable/harmful/or you just don't want LO messing with needs to be moved. Everything else like the stereo, bookcase, etc we just taught DD1 not to touch and are working on teaching the same to DD2. We tell her no and redirect her to her toys.

  • We are doing furniture and TV straps, cabinet locks and outlet plugs.

  • Is there any way to strap a pedestal table without it looking tacky? One of our end tables is a pedestal, so it would be easy to flip when he gets tall enough to reach the top.

  • We did outlet covers and cabinet locks and a fireplace hearth bumper.  The outlet covers and hearth bumper have been worth their weight in gold since DS loves to go after outlets and the hearth is right at head level when crawling.  We have furniture straps that DH will be putting on hopefully this weekend.  We are planning on wall mounting our TVs, so we haven't strapped those down yet (we are in the middle of remodeling our family room).

Oh and we have baby gates at the tops and bottoms of the stairs.  Already super helpful also.

We have a safety center at a nearby children's hospital that sells stuff for cheap and takes opened returns if they didn't work.  Super helpful.

i have a three-year old and I was mimual with the baby proffing just outlet covers and one gate I moved around as needed.  It will be a very short time that you will need to be concerned about pulling on the table if at all, my dd never pulled up on tables, with that being said if you can't strap it and you are really concerned just put it away for a few months.  I never left her in a room by herself unless she contained and safe if she went near a table i redirected and will do the same with ds.  One thing I never hear addressed and would like to bring up if you have a table cloth make sure to not let the baby near the table they can easily pull the cloth causing items on the table to come crashing down.

  • We have baby gates up, and 1 lock on the cupboard under the sink.  Our outlets are these special ones the builder installed that are already child proof, but even in our old house I didn't put the plugs in.  They just drew more attention to the outlet and DD1 just pulled them out and put them in her mouth.

  • We did outlet covers, foam padding on the coffee table and entertainment unit it has really sharp edges, but nowhere else to go., strapped down a couple of cords in the living room and office, locks only on the cabinets that have chemicals and the deep fryer (that would be messy) and a gate at the top of the basement stairs. we have a gate for the upstairs too, but since DS isn't quite moving yet we haven't put that one up yet.

Trying to limit the amount of disruption to our lives as much as possible. we still may put locks on the bathroom cabinet, but that is TBD--we may jsut keep the doors shut.
