For a little weekend funsies:

Do you speak any other languages? Fluently?

If you could learn any other language, what would it be and why?

Re: Languages?

  • The years I was in music school Italian was a necessity all of the music terms and singing arias/ Opera. I became interested in languages early on, so it was a hobby of mine.

I am fluent in Italian, french and spanish ( as a requirement in school). I took 5 years of latin, but i can not say i am fluent in it, because there is no one to converse with in it.

I think i want to learn Arabic ( from watching Homeland), Mandarin.

  • I lived in Peru for a year, so I speak passable Spanish... as in, I speak enough to get around while travelling and to carry on a basic conversation. I was a lot better while I lived there, but now I have no one to practice with.

If I had to pick just one language to learn, I'd choose German. My whole family is German, only my brother and I don't speak the language. I've always wanted to learn so I can communicate better with a lot of my relatives, and because the culture and my heritage mean a lot to me.

  • Yes, I speak Greek fluently. I can "get by" in French (I used to be fluent but have forgotten so much) and Spanish.

If I could learn another language, it would be German because it's a good language for business purposes.

  • Sadly I'm only fluent in English I struggled in foreign language classes in school and wish I knew more. I probably would learn Spanish if choosing one language since such a large population in the US speaks it as their primary language.

  • I took 5 years of Spanish between Middle and High school. In college I took Italian and American SIgn Language. I can hold my own in ASL. I would love to be fluent in ASL.

  • I am fluent in ASL.

I have a deaf brother so I grew up signing.  I also know a little bit of Spanish, enough to get me by if I'm ever stuck in Mexico without a translator.

  • I'm only fluent in English. The 5 years of Spanish I took really made me retain... nothing  :(  I wasn't very good with learning a foreign language. I can still remember words and phrases here and there, but that's it.

I wish I could learn Dutch, my husband is from Holland. He speaks to his 'rents on the phone every weekend in Dutch, and I can't understand a word.  And it makes it interesting when we go there to visit, too.

  • I speak fluent Spanish. Given the heavy polish population here in Chicago, I'd like to speak that also.

My father speaks English, Spanish, Polish, Italian, Korean, Russian, Latin, Chinese, and Portugese fluently so I heard it frequently growing up. I can understand some conversations in Italian, Latin and Portugese mostly because of the similarities to Spanish.

  • I used to be fluent in Japanese; I studied it for 9 years. I'm pretty rusty now, though.

I can understand a lot of Hebrew and speak a little. Same with Spanish. I'd love to become fluent in Hebrew, it's part of my dream to move to Israel one day.

  • Only English. I would like to learn Spanish and mandarin. Ds1 takes Spanish lessons.
  • Took Spanish in high school and college.  We are beginning German now due to H's job and the probability of international travel.   The boys and I will join him on his long-term trips.

  • I speak fluent Spanish. I'd be interested in learning Italian and French...I can read and understand some of it because of the a lot of similar vocabulary.

  • I took Spanish in HS and majored in it in college. I used to be fluent but I haven't used it in over 8 years so I am definitely not fluent any more. I have been meaning to brush up with Rosetta Stone but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

I would love to be fluent in many different languages but Spanish was the only option in HS and there were not many other options in college either.

  • Im fluent in French and English. When I say fluent I mean I can speak, write, and read it, as well as culturally integrate myself and a Frenchmen wouldn't guess Im American. "fluency" is an idea that irritates me a lot because it doesn't mean you can speak the language. It means youcan BE the language.

I know a bit of Spanish but would be screwed if I got dropped in Spain, KWIM?

I would really love to learn Italian an then mandarin. I have a knack for languages.

  • I took 4 years of Spanish in HS, but I never really use it.

I would love to learn French. I've done a bit if the Rosetta Stone program at home. I did a lot of family ancestry in the last year and found that most of my family is French and French Canadian. I think it would be nice to learn if we ever go see some if the places my family used to live in Quebec or even in France!

  • I speak/understand a little Spanish and Macedonian.  My father and his family are from Macedonia and I am so bummed that he gave up trying to teach me when I was little.  I guess I screamed and cried over it.  I would love to speak/understand more.

I would like to learn Italian.

  • I minored in Spanish and remember enough to survive if I absolutely had to without an interpreter. DH is the same. I wish we were fluent because we live in TX and DH is half Puerto Rican and we have a Latino last name so it would be awesome if DD could speak Spanish
  • I speak French fluently (DH's first language was French). I also speak a LOT of Italian and a good bit of Chinese (from working in international taxation)- tons and tons and tons of hours on global conference calls.

DH was a linguist in the Army and was in Korean Intel

If I could learn any language for fun it would probably be Korean- only because I really want to go and visit with DH.

  • My European mother refused to speak english because she claimed it is a barbaric and ugly language. I admit I do agree with her. We grew up speaking/reading/writing Japanese, French, Arabic and Spanish at home and English only at school. Actually, I never really learned Spanish, and my family members always used it to talk around me when they didn't want me to understand them... My SO and my sister still do this when they are talking about me! Rrrr. But I'm determined! I have the Pimsleur CD's and I'm now able to say that I don't understand Spanish... In Spanish! Yea!
  • I only speak English. I took 4 years of Russian between high school and college for my foreign language requirements but I was terrible at it and barely passed.

I don't really have a desire to learn another language. I suppose French would be the most useful where I live now, but that would just allow me to eavesdrop on conversations among the Canadian tourists in the summer.

  • I took French in high school and college, but I'm horrible at it. I have no ear/head for languages. Neither does DH. Now, my SIL is fluent in Spanish, French, Portuguese and I believe speaks some Italian.

I would like to learn Italian, since we're planning a trip there. :)

  • I am fluent in Slovenian, Croatian and English. I took classes for 4 years for German, but I can not say I am fluent. I understand it better then I can speak.

I would really love to know Portuguese.
