vocabulary + food

Just curious if anyone else has noticed something similar with their LO:

When DS learns a food word, he gets obsessed with that food. When he started saying cereal/cheerios (still haven't figured out which it is), he asked for and ate huge amounts of Cheerios. I now have a bunch of Cheerios in my cabinet because he's moved on. Same thing with crackers and bananas and a few others - when he learned the word, he'd ask for the constantly. Now, not as much.

Does your LO learn a food word, become obsessed with that food, then move on?

I'm wondering if it's something that goes along with language development or if it's because he's a picky eater and his eating preferences just change overnight.

Re: vocabulary + food

  • Sophia just says "Mo" for when she wants more of whatever. Or "Mmmmm".

  • DD doesn't have a lot of words yet (food or otherwise), but she definitely latches on once she realizes she is communicating!  When she learned "blub blub" which is how she says fish or goldfish, she was asking to eat blub blubs constantly!

She does this with the television as well.  She's currently alternating between asking to watch Blub Blubs - Finding Nemo - and Cat Cats - which is The Aristocats.   Once she realizes that we understand a new word, she uses is over and over, she is just so excited to communicate with us :)

  • Yes! My LO asks for "nanas" (bananas) constantly! I keep wondering if she really loves them that much, or if she just likes that she can communicate something to us & get it? I don't mind b/c they're easy for her to eat, and healthy, but I keep wondering how long she'll be able to keep up the habit!

she also constantly asks for "wa wa" (water) which is pretty much all we drink around here.

  • Can't say I've noticed anything simialr, but DD's vocabulary is still pretty limited and doesn't include much in terms of food. We have La-La, which, until recently, meant milk but also any type of beverage. She now has Lo-Lo, for water (de l'eau, in French). She has been saying Lo-Lo, but I don't know if it's because all this time I was giving he rmilk when she really wanted water, or if she's just excited about her new word.

Everything else, she'll just say "KAH!" (for "encore") if she wants more or give me a huge smile and a nod if I ask her if she wants some.

Blub blub is too cute -- DS just says "hish."

  • I never even really put that connection together, but yes, the food items he can say are the ones he wants alll the time! Banana, cheerios, cracker (graham cracker) He has just started trying to say chicken (at least that's what I assume it is) which is fitting because besides the 4 other things listed it's pretty much all he will eat.

  • DS has been saying red apple a lot but he doesn't like apples. I bought one again for him to try ... He was so excited when I showed him and ran the house screaming red apple but wouldn't eat it. Actually it's the only food he won't eat. Come to find out they had been reading a book at daycare about apples and pained apple pictures red.
