Because I'm an obsessive new mommy. . .

This is probably no big deal, and I'm probably stressing for no reason, but does anyone else have twins and one is smaller than the other? When our boys were born, David weighed 4 lbs 4 oz and John weighed 5 lbs 6 oz. I was expecting a difference, and it didn't really bother me at first. But at 5 weeks David was 6 lbs 2 oz, and John was 7 lbs 9 oz and the doctor said they were doing great. They're 7 weeks now and I'm not sure of weight, but they look so different. David looks so much smaller than John. Is it just because they're so little to begin with that one pound makes that much difference? I mean, they're both growing, but looking at them it looks like John has a lot more weight on him than David. And they are taking the same amount of formula, and have been pretty much from the beginning. Like I said, probably no big deal and I'm obsessing over nothing, but I was hoping other mommies could give me some peace of mind. TIA!

  • My MFM told me that one will be bigger.  I assume that yours are still in catch up mode.  If my doctor wasn't concerned, that would put my mind at ease.

  • My girls had the same weight difference at birth (4lbs12oz and 5lbs14oz) and they have always been different.  They are 4 now and are about 5 lbs different.  Are your boys fraternal?  If so, it's definitely normal because you're dealing with two individuals.  Even if they are ID, they are still individuals.

FYI, they will likely be different in whatever they do...size, hitting milestones, etc.

  • I figured as much. And even though the doctor said they were doing great, I didn't ask about the weight difference specifically. Was afraid I'd look dumb, but it was starting to get to me, and the next appointment isn't for another couple of weeks. I've been trying to not compare them like that, and I've been doing pretty good except with the size difference. I guess it just being noticable at a glance and not something like smiling or how many dirty diapers it was bugging me more. But I do appreciate y'all answering. It helped to calm down that voice in the back of my mind going 'but are we sure that's ok?'. Thank you!
  • There was a 5 gram difference in my ID boys' birth weights. Now at 4 month, there is 17 oz between them. D looks so small next to J. Pedi is not concerned at all because D is still gaining a good amount. Every baby is different!

  • Mine were born 3 oz apart and now weigh 34 pounds different. They barely even look related though, so I get a lot of...."soooooo, how old are they?" type questions. If you had two singles, you wouldn't think twice about them being so different, twins were just born closer together : And even ID twins can weigh much different amounts!

  • Like someone said they are 2 different people and will grow at their own rate.Mine were 12 oz apart at birth and now at a day shy of 7 months they are about 4 pounds apart. One does drink more than the other, but she is also built differently than her sister.
  • My lil guy actually weighed more than his brother at birth (well only by a few ounces).  Now his brother has surpassed him by 2 pounds!  The pediatrician hasn't expressed any concern.  One is just smaller than the other.

Think of it more as how they're individually growing...

John went from 86 oz to 121 oz= 140% of original weight

David went from 68 oz to 98 oz. = 144% of original weight- so he is actually gaining at a more rapid rate than his larger brother

Totally on target with each other... Most babies are generally double their birth weight (200%) by 6 months.

Focus on the rate of growth, not their individual sizes as they compare to each other. GL!
  • Its normal.  With my boys Sam was always bigger by a 1-5 pounds.  WIth in the past year or two Max has suddenly gotten bigger, now its almost 10 pounds bigger than his brother.

  • My twins had an almost 2 pound size difference at birth. I was closely monitored because of how large the difference was greater than 20 different and eventually I needed an emergency c/s because of IUGR. As long as the difference isn't too big and neither baby drops below the 10th percentile the size differences should be fine!

  • Ditto everyone on it being completely normal. My IDs were a pound and a quarter different at birth and L is still the "bruiser" while N is a little peanut. While they had a growth discordance in utero I attribute their growth patterns to temperament now; N just never stops moving. He eats well and is growing at a normal rate but he burns up the calories faster than his brother, who is way more chill. It sounds to me like your LOs are fine!

  • Yep, totally normal. My fraternal boys were really close at birth--3 oz and 1/4" different. As they got a little older, for a long time Alex was alway 1-2 lbs heavier and 1/2"-1"  taller. More recently at their 4 year visit, Will was 1/4" taller and 12 oz heavier. They just grow at different rates and I have no idea who is going to end up taller or heavier by the time they're adults. ;)

  • Oh and also, from about 2m on they ate VERY similar amounts (especially of formula) but still grew at such different rates. Will was a lot more active though (always has been) so that probably accounted for at least some of the difference.

  • Harry weighed 1/2 lb more at birth but Colin caught up and passed him around 3 months and has been around lb ahead since then. The only time it bothers me is when people refer to Colin as the big one, the chunk, etc. Or when they say H will be the brains and the other the brawn. It bugs me because I think do we really have to define them by their size starting now??? But that's my own issues partly.

I've noticed if I put C in the lower seat in the BJCS I don't get the same comments so that's pretty much his spot. You ladies are the only people I've ever admitted that to!! DH never noticed my pattern!
