December 2012 Moms

How much do u sleep,

So my LO sleeps pretty poorly if y remember my last post about it. During the day it's 20 min naps. Sometimes I can get her back to sleep with a lot of shushing in the swing with a pacifier.
At night we're looking at anything from
20 mins to 4 hours. 4 hours is VERRRRRY rare. It's normally 20 mins to 2 hours. I'm trying to start putting her to bed between 6 and 8 based off of some research I've done.
I have been just crawling into bed wen ever i put her down because I never know how much sleep ill get. She's up between 6 and 7...sometimes even 5:30. I can't get her to sleep past that. So I end up in the bedroom for about 11 to 12 hours and get maybe 4 to 5 hours of sleep. Between feeding her , changing her, swaddle, and trying to get her back asleep or stay asleep. I hate going to bed so early but I don't know what else to do.
Does any one else do this? I feel like I have time for NOTHINg Else

Re: How much do u sleep,

  • Little man and I go to bed between 10 and 11. He is down by 11:30 at the latest. Hew then wakes up between 3-4, back down around 30 minutes later. Then again around 6-7. We officially get up between 9-10. I get around 6-8 broken hours of sleep.

  • DD goes to bed around 7:30 and will sleep for four hours. After that it don't really know how often she wakes but it's usually about 3 times before her morning wake up around 7 or 8. She's up for a little while then but she'll get her wiggles and giggles out and will then usually sleep for another hour or two.

I cherish her "second sleep" and I think that it's what saves me most days.

  • I trot us down to the bedroom sometime between about 6pm and 7 then do side laying nursing until she falls asleep and try to delatch. She wasks up somewhere between 7:30 and 10 until the next round of being latched and feeding which is 11 or 12, again at 1something. Bit before 3am she's waking up and talking to the ceiling fan and lamp, maybe gets a diaper change care of DH and back on the boob to fall asleep until between 6 or 8am. I tend to be fully awake for most of those feedings have not actually counted up how little sleep I am getting; if I did, I would be a total grump.

  • We start trying to put DD to sleep as early as 7, just so we'll be able to go to bed by midnight. On a good night, that is. Once she's out, she stays asleep until DH gets up for work, usually around 6:30 or 7 in the morning, so she ends up sleeping 5 to 8 hours depending on the night.

The hard part is getting her to bed. She's going through this thing right now where she'll cry in the evening nonstop and it stresses us out so bad. It almost makes me wish for the days when I had to stay up till 4 and she would only sleep 2 or 3 hours, but didn't have a crying problem. The crying is that bad. Hopefully, our babies will figure things out eventually and give us a break!

  • OP : how old is your LO?

Before she was 9 weeks old, we started her bedtime routine around 7pm.  DH would give her a 10 minute bath (which she loves), get her diaper/sleeper/swaddle on, and then I would nurse her until she fell asleep. I'd give her about 10 minutes and then put her in the crib.  She woke to nurse again around 12-1am and 3-4am, and then was up for the day around 7:30am.

Then, when she was 9 weeks old, I went back to work and she started full time daycare.  She was not a fan of daycare and cried a lot of the day (unless she was eating), so the entire first week she STTN.  It was AMAZING.

Since then, she's gotten herself into a routine and I'm just following her lead.  We've moved her bedtime routine up to 6-6:30pm (because she's so crabby... still doesn't nap well at daycare, usually only about 1 or 2 hours TOTAL the whole day).  She's fed and out like a light by 7pm.  Wakes once between 1am and 3am to eat for 5-10 minutes (I'm usually back in bed within 15 minutes), and then sleeps until DH wakes her up to take her to daycare around 6:15am.  Yesterday he had a 3 hour delay (he's a teacher), and she slept until 8:30am!

What kinds of things have you tried to help her sleep?  We initially weren't swaddling, but I was getting exhausted around week 7 and said "you know what, we're trying it again!"  The helped us get more than 2-3 hours of sleep at a time.  We also moved her to the nursery, which made both DH and I panicky for about a week, but she's slept much better in there.  We also have ceiling fan running and a white noise machine turned up pretty loud.  Is she still pooping in the MOTN?  We stopped doing diaper changes when we noticed she was only peeing, because that was waking her up so much.

  • Do you know how much milk you are producing? If you LO is waking up every 20 min or 2 hrs and she is hungry it could be that. At the begining I had problems with milk supply my LO was eating and falling asleep but waking up shortly after so I started to supplement also I tried very hard to increase my milk supply but I could not. After that he was eating every 3 and 4 hours breast milk and formula and right now he is sleeping 6 to 8 hrs during the night. During the day he sleeps less, he will take a 2 hr nap in the morning and in the afternoon he will take short naps that will last 40min to 2 hrs after every feeding. But each kid is different my suggestion is to see how much milk you are producing. What i would do is try to give her more milk by expressing and give to her in a bottle to make sure she is full and see if she gets more sleep. Also talk to your pediatrician and see if they have any tips, see a lactation consultant or if the sleeping problem persist I will also see a sleep consultant. I had friends that they bfeed their LO every 2 hrs at the beging but what they did at night is that they make sure their babies were full before putting them down for the night and they usually got more sleep. They also cosleep with their Babies bc it was too much to wake up every 2 hrs. Also start a routing at night bath, feeding, swaddle, burp, little or not lights, no talking, make sure she knows what is day and night. Every LO is different we just need to find out what works best for each one. Best of luck!
  • My LO is usually down by 9:30 or 10 and I go to bed when she does.  We usually get one longer stretch out of her, 4 - 6 hours and then maybe two more 2 hour stretches.  I usually get between 6 and 8 hours of broken sleep.  I know a lot of people don't get that much, like you OP, so I can't really complain.
  • We also go to bed around 11 or midnight. We've started a little routine of story time, lotion, pjs, then nursing to sleep. He usually doesn't fall asleep until around 1 am, though very lazy nurser. Sometimes he'll wake around 3 or 4 for another feeding, sometimes not. Then he's up for the day around 7 or 8am. He usually has a long 2 to 3 hour nap in the late morning/ early afternoon and about an hour in the evening around dinner time. Other than that its little 10 to 20 minute naps sporadically throughout the day.

    He is 8 weeks old.
  • I try to get DS in bed by 8, so we head upstairs to his room around 7-7:30. Diaper change, swaddle, white noise, fan on, and then I feed him as much as I can before he falls asleep. He sleeps from 8 to 11, wakes up to eat again. I have usually slept 30 min to an hour by 11. He then wakes up again at 2. So 2 more hours of sleep for me. Then he's up again at 4. This is when it takes longer to get him back to sleep in the crib, he would rather be held at this point. So I usually get him back in his crib around 5 and he sleeps until 6-6:30 and then he's up for the day. So I guess I get about 4 to 5 hours of broken sleep at night. I wish he was a good sleeper like every other baby, but he likes to eat. I will just never know what it's like to sleep longer than 2 hours ever again.

  • We generally get 67, sometimes more depending on the night. We start putting her down after dinner, about 8 with the idea that she'll be asleep by 10:30. That's actually the hardest part bc if we lay her down before she's all the way asleep, she'll wake up. Also, she HATES having a wet diaper on, so if she pees before being completely asleep too, she wakes up mad.

But, once she's asleep, she's asleep until 6ish the next morning. Once in a while, she'll wake up around 3 for food, but she goes back down right away. She's always been a good sleeper though... Once we got past having to wake her up to nurse, she's been mostly STTN.

  •  We currently don't have a night routine but DD will fall asleep around 8:00. She is currently sleeping a 6 hour stretch followed by a 3-4 stretch; so I get 6-8 hours (broken) sleep. I do not swaddle since she doesn't seem to need it for comfort and her arms don't wake her.

I wish I had some helpful advice but I've just been playing by ear...well by her lead, lol.

  • That's totally how it was for me with my first.  He'll be 18 months this week, and he still wakes up 1-3 times every single night.

But the 2 month old?  He typically goes to bed at 7pm, wakes at 2am to eat and sleeps again until 6am.  Then he takes 3 naps, usually 1-3 hours long.  And he puts himself to sleep!

So much has to do with baby's temperament, nothing can convince me otherwise.

Same DNA, same mom & dad...toooootally different babies with different sleep patterns.  It's unreal.

ETA: to answer your original question - I go to bed around 10, sleep until 2, up at 6.  That's because I take care of the baby and my H takes the toddler.  Last night though, I gave him a break and was up at 1am with the toddler, 2am with the baby, 5am with the toddler, 6am with the baby, 7am with the toddler and up for the day.  I'd be in heaven if my toddler slept better!

She is 10 weeks old. I just noticed that she isn't pooping during the night like she used to. I didn't know that was a "thing" lol however she does start to poop between 3:30 and 4:00 am and THAT wakes her up. Makes her grunt and move all over the place. It's almost impossible to get her back to sleep after that for more than 30 mins.
I don't change her anymore if its just pee. We do swaddle. She sleeps in a rock n sleeper by our bed.

Someone else asked about my supply. That seems to be fine now. Didn't used to be but i go to a bf group on Fridays and weigh her before and after and she's getting 4 oz.

Her sleeping is SO strange. At 1:15 I laid her in the swing. Have to help her fall asleep. Lasted 20 mins. But she was obviously still tired; rubbing her eyes and crying. So I spent another 29 or so mins helping her fall back asleep. She's been out ever since. It's 2:53 and she's JUST now wakig up by crying

  • DS goes to sleep sometime between 8-10 and sleeps until sometime between 5-7. It's glorious. He's been doing this for 3 weeks now.  I go to bed between 10-11 and sleep until he wakes up in the AM.

  • Elli goes to bed between 9-10 and will sleep for 7 hours. I nurse her and she'll sleep for another 3 hours and then starts the every 2 hour feedings.

I found that once we stop swaddling her and moved her from her bassinet to a crib (still in our room) that she started sleeping a lot better, I don't know if that helped or if it's just coincidence.
