My 4 year old got his shots for school on tuesday. He got 3 of them in his arms. He ran a temp 100.6 for 2 days and then seemed fine. This morning the arm that he got the tdap in looks awful. Their is a huge red ring around the injection site. It is very hot and swollen. is this normal?
Re: question about my 4 year old.
Put in a call for to your pedis office and tell them his symptoms. They will be able to tell you if that is a normal reaction or not. I don't remember red and hot as a symptom after I got mine a few years back.
ETA: I googled " normal reaction to dtap vaccine". Here is what I found:
Mild Problems (Common)
These problems occur more often after the 4th and 5th doses of the DTaP series than after earlier doses.
Sometimes the 4th or 5th dose of DTaP vaccine is followed by swelling of the entire arm or leg in which the shot was given, for 1 to 7 days (up to about 1 child in 30).
Other mild problems include:
These problems generally occur 1 to 3 days after the shot.
I would probably give tylenol or motrin to relieve the soreness. HTH!
Call you pedi and give mortin/pain reliever for now.
Dylan had a bump and redness when he got his done before Kindergarten.
That sounds like it could just be a normal reaction. I second (or third) the Motrin.
I had to get a TDAP shortly after DS was born and it hurt like a mother for almost a week. My arm was so swollen and tender! Ouch.
