Working Moms

Finding play groups for Working Moms

Hi There,

I am going back to work in April and was wondering how you found a play group or moms group as a working mom.  I don't belong to a temple or church so that is out and I've heard of the MOMs club but I was just curious of any other resources.

Thx!

Re: Finding play groups for Working Moms

  • I have twice now joined a moms group through meetup, but have been "kicked out" twice now b/c they always are meeting while I am at work...sigh.

Are there any weekend type classes you can take with your child? That might be a good way to meet other moms.

I started my own group for working moms on meetup.com.

I was thinking of starting my own group on meetup.com.  What all does it involve?

  • When I transitioned from being a SAHM to a WOHM I stayed in the SAHM mother's group and it so happened that this group had a Working Moms Network (sub group). So this WM Network group, we meet every other month on a Saturday.

I said all that to say, maybe you could see if one of the SAHM groups that you are familiar with would welcome a Working Moms Network as a component of the group---especially since a lot of SAHMs do end up rejoining the workforce outside of the home eventually, at some point.

  • Definitely meetup.com.  I'm part of a mom & baby group on there, and they have events at various times.  It's also a great way to learn about events in the area too.  We sometimes can't meet the group at the time they are, but able to go to the events. It's been a lot of fun! :) Good luck!

  • You'll meet other moms at daycare. Also look for some MOPS groups in the area.

  • I believe MOMs is pretty much exclusive to SAHMs.  I joined a moms group through meetup.com when I was on ML and haven't been to a single event since then (8 months ago).  I am currently trying to get working moms included in my church's playgroup.  Honestly it is a HUGE CHALLENGE for WMs.  Everyone is so busy all the time that it's almost impossible to get together.  If you want to find a group, you may have to take the initiative to start it yourself.

  • Other than neighborhood friends & just a couple ppl I know locally we don't really do a lot of playdates but I have twins so it is sort of like a built in playdate (with a lot more fighting).

My new location has this site but it is not very active--- but where I used to live the local mommies network site was VERYYYYY active and had a working moms sub-board that organized get togethers on weekends & whatnot for the working moms. you might want to check out if they have a site for your area & if it is active  (mommiesnetwork.com i think).

I agree you might have to just try starting it yourself, Maybe if you know 1 or 2 other working moms and ask them to invite 1 or 2 ppl, etc. I started my own book group that way & it worked out great.

  • I met other WM's in DC. There are other groups in my area like stiller strides but they cater to SAHM's available during the normal workday.

  • I just go to the park in the early evening a lot in the summer and I've met some working moms and kids there.

There's also  a community center near my house that has a play group on Saturday mornings.

  • I didn't. I figured play groups were more for socialization, and DD was getting plenty of that at daycare. I didn't have time outside of work to worry about making new mom friends.
