+opk

What time of day did you get a +OPK? I was told by my docotor no matter what the kit says to test in late afternoon early eveing? Any one told the same thing?

Re: +opk

  • I was always told to test with opk in the morning, specifically the second urine of the morning. That was because the protocol with my RE was to then go in clinic for trigger shot and IUI 24 hours later.

  • When I starting digging into the reasons WHY my RE's office was recommending testing at a specific time, I realized it was all about their convenience and when they liked to be able to perform the IUI's and had very little to do with what was best for catching my body's timing.

So with my first 2 IUI's (done in a Dr's office, but not an RE and they had little involvement except the actual procedure, I would just call and say we're coming in), I tested in the morning with first urine.  With the second 2, in the RE's office, I started testing 3 times a day because I didn't trust them and I felt like I knew more.

For the record, and mostly due to the expense of the OPK's, I didn't star the 3-a-day process until I was really expecting to receive a positive test or I had a "Feeling" I was getting close.

Feel free to PM me if you want more information or detail, I'd have to dig back through my records to see exactly when I got my positives.

  • Thank you for sharing I really didnt understand why the timing had to tie in but what you have said makes lots of sense. Today is day 14 of my cycle and I start testing on day 10. I usually get a positive on 14 or 15. Do you think that if I test in the morning is it possible to be negative then later on to get a positive?

  • We tested for the LH surge twice a day once in the morning and once in the evening. We read a lot about how it can be easy to miss an LH surge.

  • Because I was being so closely monitored by u/s and used a trigger shot every time we did the IUI, I only began testing in my 4th cycle/3rd IUI because of the holidays and weekends getting in the way. That's when the RE office suggested it as a back up.They told me to test once in the morning, but I tested in the morning and at night, partially from reading other people's experiences on here.

For our last IUI, I never tested positive on my own, had my trigger shot and of course tested to to make sure it worked the next morning.

yes this happened to us. M was only testing in the morning per the directions. then one day she randomly tested at 2am on a Sat morning and it was positive, then when it was 7am (normal time) again it was negative. Friday at 7 am had been negative.  So she must have surged after the test Friday and it completed before 24 hours had passed.  We were super lucky to catch the 2am one (and it worked!).  When we do this again in the future though I think we'll test 2x a day with cheapies and if its questionable/positive follow with a digital one.  I read that everyones surge is different though...hers must have been short.

The whole TTC process with our RE really taught me to think through things and stick up for myself.  I am a reasonably intelligent person but for some reason when I step into a Dr.'s office, I seem to forget/doubt that.  While TTC, I realized that if the Dr./Nurse could not answer a question in a way that made sense to me or that I found reasonable, then it may in fact have been that their answer was NOT reasonable and was based on their preferences rather than fact.  They specifically told me to NOT test more than once a day (it would "Confuse" me - yeah right), and to only do it on their timing.  Had I done that, I would have missed my surge both times and would not be 20 days away from having a baby right now.

GL, read a lot, get to know your body, and trust your instincts!!

  • I was told to test in the morning around 11 until 11 at night. something about my surge is higher in the evening . But , when I ovulated Tuesday the day of my IUI I tested at 9:45 am and it was positive and I use clear blue and a walgreens brand.

  • I haven't had my positive just yet. I usually know becuase every month before ovulation I get cramps near my ovaries on one side or the other. I can feel that cramping today. I just wasn't sure if I don't happen to get my positive result if I should go in to the docotors or I should wait? It's confusing before using these test strips I knew every month now this being our first attempt I feel like I am over thinking. This time it is all natural besides the fact we are getting IUI I am not on any medication just not sure what to rely on what I know or what the test is saying.
