DD turned 15MO yesterday and still isn't walking or talking much (she say's one word) and I am SO sick of conversations going about like this:
"Is she walking?"
"No."
"Oh but I bet she's talking up a storm right? A lot of kids don't start walking when they are talking alot."
"She say's hi"
"Oh...well that's okay too..my unclesmothersbrotherssistersnephew didn't walk until they were 18MO"
I know DD isn't the ONLY one but it feels that way sometime so I thought it would be helpful to see who else is on the same page.
Re: Who has a LO that's still not walking or talking?
Count my DS in! He LOVES walking behind a walker and whips that thing around and gets everywhere with it. But he has not taken one unassisted step.
DS's words that he knows what they mean consist of uh-oh and mo (more), he says mama and dada a lot, but more just babbling them.
And yes, I feel like he is so far behind! I kind of feel guilty because I'm not home much this time of year working on this stuff with him (I'm a CPA). Younger kids at daycare are doing so much more
My DD started walking about a week after turning 14 months. So, she is walking now, but if it's encouraging, she sort of started walking out of no where. She didn't have a walker/push toy, though she would do a lot of cruising along furniture. Up until she started walking, she would occasionally take 1 or 2 steps on her own. Then one Friday, she took about 8 steps on her own. By the end of the weekend, she was walking and has been almost exclusively walking (with very little falling) since. (Maybe everyone starts walking well quickly....I don't know. I expected more few steps, fall, few steps, fall, etc...)
And my DD wasn't talking either, but I think this week she has started saying "Mama" and "Dada" and meaning it. (I've been skeptical b/c we have a history of speech issues, but I think so!)
So......while my LO is now walking and talking, it *just* happened so I know where you are coming from.
I wasn't worried about the walking - I figured she'd walk in time. Her physical movements seemed fine and I don't think I would have been concerned until 18 months.
We have had concerns with her speech - she was a late babbler - wasn't babbling at 9 months - so the pedi referred us to the Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) program which we decided to take advantage of instead of waiting and determining there was a problem later. Long story short, DD started babbling a bit after 9 months, but she's never been very vocal - I think she's more of a "quiet observer". She doesn't sign, either (despite me consistently trying some simple signs). But she has been an early pointer and very good at following directions. From what I understand, it is much more important that your child is communicating - be that with speaking, pointing, grunting, signing, etc. If your LO communicates in other ways, I wouldn't be worried (as long as there has been babbling). If your LO doesn't communicate and/or there hasn't been much babbling, I would talk to your pedi. (Speaking of pedi....have you had your 15 month appt yet? Is your pedi concerned or does s/he see enough progress and think the walking and talking will just come in its own time?)
My ds does not talk either. He walked a little late at 14 months. He's 15 months now and still does not say a single word! He can shake his head no and understands us, he just refuses to talk. I hate when people constantly ask "is he talking yet" and last month it was, "is he walking yet?" Our pediatrician keeps saying that between 18 months and 24 months they will have a vocabulary spurt. I sure hope so!
DD isn't a big babbler. She started at about 9m as well but doesn't do it much or make many sounds. She mostly just screeches like a howler monkey, not sure if that is really considered communication lol.
Unfortunately our pedi doesn't do a 15M appointment so we have to wait until 18M. I'm not so much worried as just frustrated with that being the only think people ask about and acting like it's a huge deal and all.
