Got Milk? Cow's milk, that is.

I know the rule of thumb is no cows milk until 12 months, but I'm wondering if anyone is thinking of starting a little early.

DD turns 11 months next weekend and for the past 3 or 4 days she has showed NO interest in her bottles or purees and only wants the few items of table food that we've introduced. I'm wondering if its time to move to "people food" and milk to get the calories in to her.

I'm going to call her pediatrician this afternoon, but I thought it didn't hurt too see what others were doing or have done with older kids.

  • I want to say formula has more calories than cows milk. And it has to do with digestion I believe also which is why they say wait. I would offer her formula in a sippy cup and see if that makes a difference. i never switched before 12 months, but my older boys are quite a bit older so maybe things have changed?

  • We've been giving it since around 9 months, but not consistently until around 10.5 months. He was getting about a 2 oz sippy at dinner. Once he started finishing that and asking for more, we went up to 4 oz. He has started taking less BM and eating more table food on his own decision. Daycare offers bottles of BM, and he either takes very little or flat out refuses them at times. I know that WCM will become a suppliment and beverage at around 12 months, and the BM will be replaced by food rather than WCM. I'm still not sure how that transition will continue to look like, but I'm just letting DS take the lead.

  • My girl is 11 months old and she's been eating table food for almost two months. I can hardly get her to eat purees anymore. She rather pick food up. She is still getting formula four times a day in a sippy cup now. I do plan on making the switch to WCM in about two weeks (she will be almost 12 months old).

  • My pedi recommends starting to introduce cows milk in a sippy cup starting at 11 months.  I did it when DS was 11 months, but that was because my supply was starting to drop due to my pregnancy.  Since DD isn't having nursing issues, I might wait a little while longer.  Check with your pedi to see what they suggest.

  • We just started this week. His interest in nursing has been waning since the beginning of December, he's on 3 meals a day plus snacks and loves water (and DD's milk) so we started giving him a little of his own with breakfast and dinner. He only nurses 2-3 times in a 24 hour period and won't really take a bottle anymore. I considered formula since I don't really have a stash left, but at 11 months I think we can drag it out just that little bit longer.
