Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Mixing cereal and baby food?

I know this is a silly question, but my dd is currently eating two meals of baby food a day and nursing about 4-5x's a day. I think she would enjoy her food more if it were a little thicker and so I  was thinking of mixing in some rice cereal, any tips? Also I want to start giving her more solid foods and am not sure what to start with. I've given her the little puffs and she really likes those but I want to add some other things in as we'll, any ideas?

She is 7 1/2 months old!

Re: Mixing cereal and baby food?

  • I don't see why not. At 7 months I'd up to 3x a day. Good baby food ideas are bananas, yogurt, rice and oatmeal cereal, pur?es!

  • For finger foods, try bite sized fruit like bananas or pears. Other great finger foods are avocado, Cheerios, cheese...
Also, if you are giving a fruit that is slippery, you can roll it ok wheat germ or crushed Cheerios first to make it easier for baby to grasp.

  • I mix our baby food with rice cereal and oatmeal.  For breakfast I often do oatmeal, a fruit puree and a dash of cinnamon.  At lunch or dinner, we'll often do a little rice mixed with veggies.  We eat a lot of rice at home so I've also fed him individual grains of rice and that's been successful but the cereal tends of make his veggies seem more filling.  I just try to be sure I'm not doing it so much he gets backed up!

  • Lots of great advice from PP!

My only caveat about mixing cereal with purees is that I think it dulls the flavour.  My LO was liking greeen beans, but then I made a batch that was kind of watery so I thickened it up with cereal, which he ate no problem (for a week and half or so, from the freezer).  Since then though he's been a lot fussier about plain green beans (no cereal) so I'm wondering if he got too used to the oatmeal dulling the flavour.

    Good luck!!

Great idea!  Do you think you could use dry baby cereal instead?

  • Thanks for all the great ideas everyone!!
  • DD loves her oat cereal mixed with bananas, peaches, or apple/cinnamon. Go for it, get creative, and have fun! The more flavours the better!

  • I mix cereal and puree foods. I just make the cereal like the box says, but a little thicker then mix the food. He seems to like it.

     Some good "starter" foods are:

    - Sweet potatoes (Can be stored in the fridge up to 4 days, freezer up to a month)

    - Bananas (make and feed fresh, they get gross after just a few hours)

    - Avacados (same storage as bananas)

    - Apples (Same storage as sweet potatoes)
