I feel like an idiot because I don't really know what "normal" diaper rash looks like, but my son (1 year old) has literally never had diaper rash until this week. We had his first birthday party this week, and we had both a fruit tray and a veggie tray (among other things, obviously), so we have lots of cut up fruits and veggies left, and I've been giving him bite-sized pieces of raw veggies (peppers, cucumbers, broccoli) for lunch and/or dinner and sometimes some fresh pineapple for breakfast. It's definitely more fresh/raw fruit and veggies than he normally eats, but I haven't been giving him any fruit/veggie purees, which he normally eats at most meals.
Yesterday and today he has red bumps around his anus and up the back of his butt, and a friend suggested that maybe it's just from eating too many fruits and veggies. I'm putting Boudreaux's Butt Paste on it, and I will definitely cut back on the veggies. But I remember reading that raised red bumps around the anus could be a sign of a food allergy or sensitivity. Is there any way to tell the difference between that and a diaper rash?
Re: Diaper Rash vs Allergy
Thanks! I'll stop giving him pineapple and see if that helps.
His well check is next week, so I'll bring it up with his pediatrician.
Since he has never had diaper rash before, I had a "Holy crap! What is wrong with my child??" moment when I changed his diaper, so I figured I'd ask.
I'm crazy allergic to pineapples and I get raised bumps on my chest/face/arms if I eat it. Is why I think its probably a sensitivity.
Sorry to hijack the post ... Do your boys have any allergies? Asthma? DD2 has bad eczema, and the pedi. said he thinks she might have asthma as well. The reason why I ask is that I have heard that eczema, asthma and allergies usually occur altogether. I can deal with the eczema, and shudder at the asthma, but I'm so scared she going to be allergic to something common that just going to be a lot of trouble for her. I have also heard they can outgrow this. I should probably read up on it.
Thanks! Good to know!
I swear my DD did the same thing at the same age. Is he teething at all? If it is becoming yeasty, put some jock itch cream on before applying your diaper rash cream. Try cutting out the more acidic fruits and veggies too to see if it makes a difference.
ETA: let him dry out as much as possible.
DD got a bad rash after her birthday party, we discovered it was from the cake. Sugary foods cause a bad diaper reaction. Pedi says it isn't an allergy and once she is potty trained it won't be an issue.
In your case, pineapple does sound like it could be the issue! DD can't have many fruits for other reasons so I didn't think of this when reading your post!
