Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Bottle? Solids? Juice?

So many questions! How are you feeding LO solids, before or after bottle? We were doing after, and just read up about how around 7 months you can start giving solids first. DS will be 8 months next week.

Also he has been having constipation issues. We work with a GI nurse anyway for his dairy allergy and reflux anyway but they've been having us use a suppository on him when he gets really backed up. I'm thinking though that he needs more fluids in his day however he still doesn't have the hang of a sippy cup. The pedi said we could give up to 4oz of diluted juice a day like prune or pear but I really don't want to put anything other than formula in his bottles. Plus I've heard of some people who are against giving their kids juice at all.

So after all that, I guess I'm just wondering what you all do? Thanks!

Re: Bottle? Solids? Juice?

  • i give solids before the bottle... i started this probably around six months... he drinks between 24-30 ounces a day... the solids do not fill him to the point where he won't take the bottle... in fact, he gets excited and drinks it pretty quickly... maybe because he is thirsty??!! :)

as of the other issue, i am of no help... i usually listen to all the advice my pedi gives me though... so maybe your pedi knows whats best for your little guy and his tummy.

  • I usually give solids before a bottle.  that way I know hell eat most of it.  *LO is 7 months next week* LO has also been very constipated, and at day care this week he actually screamed all morning- and i mean ALL morning they said he only had a 10 min break where he wasn't screaming.  then he pooped and has been the happiest baby since.  I called the Dr office and they said we could give diluted juice.  LO doesn't really get the sippy cup either- well I just started trying to give it to him.  I have read to NOT give juice in a bottle that it should be given only in a cup.  You could try a straw or try having LO drink right from a cup (we might try this soon).  the juice ive been trying with LO is an all natural (I think Motts) unsweated apple juice.  I think its a bit too tart for him (I bought it for myself but its def need sugar for me!)
  • Have you tried giving water in a regular cup? I only give LO juice in a cup.

  • I am against giving juice but a few months ago when LO was having major constipation issues our Dr said we could give her a couple ounces of baby prune juice. It really did help. We only had to give it to her on a few occasions. Now that she's eating solids if we were to have another constipation issue I'd give her some of the prune purree.
