Transfer to Toddler Bed?

We started the transistion to a Toddler bed.  Against my will might I add.  But DH insisted because he doesn't want me lifting DD into the crib.

The first night went okay, the 2nd was okay...She is sleeping through the night.  but when she wakes up (around 6) she gets right out.  Which is fine...I'm just worried about the first time she wakes up at 3 am and gets out when normally she would fall back asleep.

Has anyone else strarted the transistion?  What were your experiances?

After this week we will decide weather or not to go back to the Crib or not.

Here is a picture of her in her Crib, She really loves it!  But like I said, i'm still skeptical!

Re: Transfer to Toddler Bed?

  • We put our older DD in a toddler bed at 21 months, two months before DD2 was born.  It was a rough couple of nights at first, but within a week she was fine.

I'd advise against going back to the crib at this point, unless she's just not ready and you think you'd keep her in the crib for a long time.

Our DD1 wasn't necessarily ready to switch, but she adapted really well (and was a couple months older than your DD) and it worked out for us.

I don't have any advice- but is that a springer spaniel you have? We are looking into getting another one. Did you go through a breeder?

  • Yes, I springer Spaniel.  She is great!  She's 3 years old now.  Quite a handle the first year (but aren't all puppies).

We did go through a breeder, she was from Eastlake area.   I can for sure get you her contact information if you are interested!  I'm not sure if they have any more litters coming soon or not.

YES please! We've been searching online for breaders without too much luck.  If you can email me or pm here with the info I would be super grateful!  If they don't have litters maybe they can point us in right direction.  Thanks!

  • ::insert audible sigh::  We transitioned DD to her toddler bed at around 16-17 months.  The months are all starting to meld together.  For the most part, we like it better than when DD was in the crib.  However, some nights have been harder because of it.  Every child is different, I don?t know if you?ll end up in the same boat, but we were just staring to go through the 10th leap/18mo developmental phase.  Which really messed with her sleep schedule, so for us, I think most of the issues with transitioning were compounded by the 10th leap.  Now, just 2 days shy of 19 months it is getting better.  I will not say it is over because then I?ll jinx myself.

My only recommendation, don?t try to go back to the crib.  We did that and it was a nightmare.  I ended up pulling the rails and doing the mod back to the toddler bed at 2/3 am because I couldn?t take the screaming anymore.  We gave it a week and then the second week it started going downhill (again, mostly because of that 10th leap I think) so we put the rail back on.  With the rail back on DD would scream the second I laid her in the crib, even though we were still doing her normal routine and she was falling asleep just fine like that in her toddler bed.  She didn?t want to be in her ?caged? crib anymore.  They have such personalities now.

Any who, yes, she sometimes still wakes up at 1, 2, or even 3am.  She just comes into our room, comes to my side of the bed and says, ?Mommy.?  I wake up, take her back into her room and put her back to bed and comfort her till she falls back asleep (minutes usually) and then I am back in bed.  Personally, I enjoy that much better than waking up to a kid crying/screaming in the other room.

  • I saw that you still use bumper pads in the toddler bed too? I'm just curious did anyone else use bumper pads in a crib or toddler bed or both?

I just sent her a message!  I'll keep you updated!

I know I found her in the Cleveland Plain dealer classifieds online.  Maybe try there too if you haven't already?

I love my bumper pads!  I don't care what people think.  She has always had them and does well with them.  I don't know what i'd do without them.

  • We never did a crib. It was seen as a torture device by a certain child. So, DD has always slept in a queen size bed. As she got mobile, we lowered the bed to where it's just a mattress on the floor. I stopped sleeping with her last summer. So, I guess she's been in a "toddler bed" since last July.

As she gets bigger, we'll put the box spring back, and then ultimately a bedframe.

  • I'm keeping DD in the crib until she climbs out. I don't care if she's 3 when that happens. BabyJail4Lyfe
