Natural Birth

Heart-Shaped Uterus?

I had a dating U/S this AM and the tech mentioned that I have a heart-shaped uterus. In looking at the screen, it was slightly heart-shaped - a little divit at the top.

Of course, I came home and googled (I know, I know....) and now I'm a little worried. I read things like "high incidence of breech presentation", "pre-term labor", "high risk", "risk of 1st and 2nd tri MC", etc. I also read accounts of people with heart-shaped uterus who carried healthy babies full-term. It seems like the incidence of complication increases with the severity of the deformity. In my opinion, mine was just slightly heart-shaped.

I'm hoping for a natural birth and I'm really, really hoping this doesn't dash those plans! I have my next appt. on 3/5, so plan to discuss with the Dr. then.

Re: Heart-Shaped Uterus?

  • I have this, and my LO was breech until 37 weeks...and then flipped on his own. After an unsuccessful version and chiro treatment, too! So I attribute it just to him being stubborn. Natural birth is still completely possible. It really doesn't affect the pregnancy very much unless its severe. Ask your OB for sure, but don't worry too much!

  • Also, at my first US at twelve weeks it was pronounced heart shape. By 28 weeks, the uterus had stretched so much that you couldn't even tell. My OB said that's very common and why it doesn't always affect much!

  • My (previously) slightly arcuate and tilted uterus was "righted" fairly early with in my PG with DS1. There are lots of variations of normal!
  • Thank you both for sharing positive experiences!
