Car seat travel tips

DH, DS and I are going on a trip to visit family in April and it will be our first time traveling since DS has upgraded from infant carrier car seat to convertible car seat.  I've read a lot of horror stories about renting car seats from car rental places, so that's not an option for me, but I was wondering what you all do when you travel.  Do you just bring your car seat and check it with the baggage?  Do you buy a cheapie car seat (i.e. a Cosco Scenera) and bring that so you don't have to uninstall the car seat from your car when you get to the airport, and reinstall it when you get back?  What do you do?  Any tips would be appreciated.

Oh, and I did order the straw cups :)

Re: Car seat travel tips

  • We bring the seat - we bought a bag for it off Amazon and just check it with our luggage (airlines check them for free).

It's honestly only a hassle walking to and from the airport, otherwise it's either checked with ur baggage or installed in your car, a taxi, a rental, etc..

I think have our own seat is great because Grace has a familiar place to sit and I don't have to worry about the conditioner cleanliness if a rental seat.

  • I'm going to watch this post.  We are traveling soon too and I am trying to figure out the same thing!  I am leaning towards just bringing our Marathon, but I'm still wondering if we should get a cheaper one for traveling in case something happens to it.  Our plan was to gate check it either way.

  • We flew with DD when she was 13MO and was still in her infant seat however I would NOT recommend checking it if you can at all avoid it (most airlines will let you use the seat on the plane for free if it's not full) DD's seat got lost and we had to get a loaner from the airport. The seat was fine but it really sucked trying to install a seat we'd never used before (and it was a convertible one at that so completely different from what we were used to) into a rental car at 2am. So if we were to fly again I wouldn't check it.
