suspecting twins

Just wondering when you suspected you were having twins? I had fraternal twins 13 years ago and my sister had identical twins 4 years ago. I am 33 and know the possibility of twins goes up in your 30's. I had DS 3 years ago and was super happy when he was a singleton. This pregnancy I am having some symptoms that are very similar to things I experienced with the twins. Soo I am wondering what were the symptoms that made you think you were having twins?

I know that nothing is going to put my mind at ease until I have a u/s but my doc apt isn't for a week and a half. TIA

Re: suspecting twins

  • Not until I had my u/s.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • I had a feeling that there was more than one in there but I didnt pay much attention to it until I had the u/s. I wouldnt put much faith in symtpoms as every pregnancy is different.
  • I knew almost without a doubt, but it's a long story and I'm a little nuts. I didn't have any physical symptoms early on, but once I hit about 8 weeks my twin pregnancy was wildly different from my others. That said, I had boys this time around and girls the other times, so that could have been it, too.

I just had to barge in here to say.... BananaPancake, your children are gorgeous!! I love your siggy pics.

For OP, I never did have that "feeling", but this was my first pregnancy. The ultrasound did it for me. I think your chances of concieving twins again is slightly higher, but not sure by how much. Good luck!

  • Just a side note that your sister's idents have nothing to do with an increased likelihood of twins for you. Identical twins are when one fertilized egg splits into two embryos. They're an accident of nature and there is no demonstrated genetic predisposition for them. fraternals, on the other hand, are the result of two fertilized eggs. There can be a genetic predisposition for the release of two eggs during one cycle.

We did IVF, so we knew there was an increased possibility, but we didn't know for sure until the u/s. I never had any m/s or anything else that would have led me to suspect twins.

  • Nope, no suspicion other than we were going thru fertility treatments. I had zero morning sickness or any other of the 'typical' symptoms of a multiples pregnancy.

  • I know that there isn't a specific "Aha I am having twins" symptom. I was just wondering if there was anyone who thought they might be having twins and why they thought that.

As for my sisters twins I was just establishing that twins run in the family. Also my FIL was a twin, GrandMIL's second set.

Most of all I know that an u/s is the only way to know for sure but my brain is going crazy with what ifs and I am sure yall understand that. I will now back out back to first tri. Thanks

  • I only suspected it was possible because I had taken clomid so I knew my chances were increased, and I will admit, I kind of had a "feeling."  However, I didn't have any symptoms that felt different than my singleton pregnancy.

  • Only reason I would have suspected twins is because we did FSH with IUI so our chances of multiples were higher. Also when my nurse called with my beta numbers she said it could be more than one since they were high.  I know betas can vary widely but that implanted the thought of twins in my head. I had my double stroller picked out before our ultrasound that confirmed twins.

I had no clue until my ultrasound.  You definitely may have a genetic predisposition because you had fraternal twins before.  But identical twins aren't hereditary at all.  And also, anyone in the father's family has nothing to do with it either, because you would be the one ovulating 2 eggs, it has nothing to do with his sperm.  Not being snarky...just informing you:)  I will say that I have actually had less morning sickness with my twins than I did with my 2 single babies, so I really was shocked.

  • None. I had zero symptoms.

The only way to find out is to have an u/s.

  • Not until I saw multiple heartbeats on my 7 week u/s.  However, all of my ILs assumed I was having multiples because of my high betas.  FIL even said, "What?  Do you have three in there?"  Annnd, I did... for a while.  I didn't really think that though until I actually saw it.  Just assumed Betas were high from the IF Tx and trigger.

  • Ditto on the In laws comment...... it really doesnt matter how many twins there were in hubby's family.

Why would you think it did?

  • I don't know that there was really a specific symptom that made me think it, but I suspected twins from the moment I found out I was pregnant. Kind of like how moms sometimes just 'know' it's going to be a boy or a girl. And it wasn't only me, it was my mom, grandmother, my brother-in-law, my husband, and our entire group of friends that said they thought we were having twins before we found out. Though our friends might have more to do with another couple we're friends with finding out they were having twins after going to the ER the night after we found out we were pregnant. Overall, and all this biological fact and data aside, I think mother's intuition is pretty spot on most of the time. Plus I've read in several places, I think including this site, that suspecting you're having twins is a possible sign you are having them. Hope this helps!

Had to go find it to make sure I wasn't crazy, but yup. Thought it was silly at first, but I've talked to several other twin mommies that swear they 'just knew'. Plus I myself was convinced that there was more than one before the ultrasound confirmed it, though I tried to ignore it and thought I was just being weird. Must be one of those unsolved mysteries of the universe. lol

Im not saying it doesnt Ever happen.  It is no different than a mom saying she Knows she is having a specific gender... and is then proven wrong. Tons of women 'suspect' twins or hope for them bc they just 'have a feeling', and it turns out to be a healthy singleton pregnancy. It's probability. A certain percentage of ladies hoping for twins, will indeed have them.... and the rest that wanted them, well.... how was that Intuition for them? Is some people's intuition better than others? Nope, it is all just chance, unless of course there was intervention/help.
