Disgusting Lovey Habit

DS has a lovey that he started with when I took away his paci at the one year mark.

It's a dog stuffed animal, and he chews on it.  It gets so full of saliva, that it stays wet all the time.  He goes to daycare, which is germy enough, but this thing goes with him.  I know I can't avoid daycare germs and illness, but as soon as he gets better, he gets sick again.  I don't attribute it to the wet lovey, but I know it's not making matters better.  No matter how much I wash it, it just gets filthy and disgusting again.

How can I get him to stop chewing it?  What on earth do I do about it?

    My DD used to do the same thing with burp cloths to fall asleep until she was close to 2 1/2 years old.  She was going to start daycare, and I didn't want her to fall asleep with a burp cloth all the time.  One day we just decided to go cold turkey with her with her nap.  We told her that she was a big girl now and that burp cloths were for babies.  It worked.  She was able to get off of it for naps.  Then, we told her the same thing for her bedtime.  That worked too.

    Eh, it is what it is. Part of why it's a lovey is because it feels all gooey and wet and gross. LOL

    DS has 3 of the same lovey. I wash and rotate.

    I would try and see if he could start going to DC without the lovey. That gives you time to wash it and keeps the germs away from it.

    Lose it?  Pr restrict it to the crib.  That's what I would probably do.

    DD does the same thing! We made a rule that it stays in her room and never comes out. She can chew on it at night but then she has to leave it in her room the next day. She fights with us 50% of the time. I couldn't take telling her to take it out of her mouth all day anymore. Hopefully she will stop this disgusting habit soon!

    i have no advice by my 5.5 YO started doing this when she stopped sucking her thumb.  So gross!  I swear she has an oral fixation.
