Hi Ladies,
I'm not a multiples mommy but my best friend is. She is 29 weeks and 3 days pregnant with identical twin girls and her water broke this morning. I've talked to her about what they are doing (magnesium, steroids, antibiotics, hospital bed rest) but I'm just so worried about her and her husband. I live 2 hours away but I want to support her in any way I can.
I'm just wondering if anyone has any positive stories they can share about twins born so early, or if you ladies have any advice on how I can help a friend facing what will likely be a long NICU stay. Oh and does anyone know what the average birth weight is for twins at this gestational age?
Thanks!
Re: Best friend's water broke @ 29 weeks
My good friend's water broke at 22 weeks. They were able to keep her pregnant for an additional 3 weeks, getting the babies to viability. If your friend can stay pregnant for 3 weeks that gets her to 32, which is pretty good!
I'm sorry to say that my friend did not have the best outcome - they lost one of their twins, but the other is a year old now and thriving. The extra weeks between 25 and 30 are huge, though, and I think your friend has every reason to have a good outcome.
As for ways to support her, I live very close to my friend, so I was able to visit often and drop off meals etc. Maybe you could send her a hospital care package, with ways to pass the time (magazines, craft projects, word puzzles, whatever) and some snacks?

My multiples/parenting/pregnancy/miscarriage blog
After viability (24 weeks) there is a huge, huge increase in success with each and every week. By 29 weeks, she will definitely have NICU time, but they should be ok. And if she can last another 2-3 weeks, it should be a very positive outcome.
I only know one person who had twins super early, but hers were born at 23 and 24 weeks. And she was a heavy smoker throughout her pregnancy. (This is my best friend's SIL...not a friend of mine). The 23 weeker didn't make it but the 24 weeker is almost 18 months. She has some issues though. But there is a HUGE difference between 24 weeks and 29, especially with a baby that had a healthier prenatal period.

ETA: My boys were 2lbs13oz and 3lbs3oz at birth. They were a little big for their gestational age.
7/30/12 - B/G twins born at 33w4d due to PPROM
My twins were born at 28w4d, 2 lbs and 2.7 lbs. Average weight for 29 weeks is around 2.5-3 lbs. No baby is the same but generally 29 weekers have a very good chance for positive outcomes. Survival rate is over 90% at 28 weeks and continues to go up each week with the risk for long term issues going down each week. For us it was a long NICU stay but they are both healthy and doing very well now. This blog was put together by preemie moms on TB and it has lots of good info including other mom's preemie stories and info on how to help if you have a friend with NICU babies.

We appreciated the cash gifts most, to be honest. We live over an hour from the hospital so using it for gas money or fast food was much appreciated.
