Coffee?

Just wondering.. is anyone else out there drinking coffee? I stick to 1 cup a day (usually in the afternoon while DD naps) but I already had one this morning with my hubby over breakfast and am now craving a second cup.

I try to drink enough water to offset the diuretic effect of the caffeine... they are regular size mugs of dripped coffee from my 1-cup machine, not jumbo mugs or anything...

Re: Coffee?

  • I have 16 oz every morning (since morning sickness faded).

It's fine. Up to 300 mg of caffeine a day is safe, and that's a conservative line. The main risk of too much caffeine is first trimester miscarriage, which seems pretty unlikely as we're past first tri.

Some people like to torture themselves "just in case". I'm not one of them.

  • I'm so jealous!  I miss coffee so much!  I was a 1 to 2 cup a day drinker religiously (decaf or regular didn't matter) but since getting pregnant I can't even stand the smell of it!

  • I drink 1-2 cups 3-4 times a week. On my non-coffee days, I still drink tea.

  • I drink a cup a day, no more than two. Caffeine is no longer considered a diuretic, though, so no need to worry about that aspect. Caffeinated beverages contribute to your total water intake as much as non caffeinated beverages. It only has a diuretic effect if you consume massive quantities (like 7 cups of coffee).

  • I would have one in the morning and one around three. I've switched my morning coffee to oj and still have the afternoon cup.  I find I need it more around that time.

  • I occasionally have a Starbucks frap but that might be like every other week. Not a big coffee drinker but I love fraps.

  • I have a cup or 2 just about everyday.
  • For a while there in the first trimester coffee was a total turn off, but now I am pretty much back to my regular 12 oz or so in the morning.  My ob is totally ok with it, no need to suffer more than the usual pregnancy problems Smile

Loving every minute with two sweet boys!

  • I have a largeish cup every morning. And I'll have a coke every now and then, if the headaches are kicking my tail and Tylenol isn't cutting it.

And I don't have a single ounce of guilt or anxiety about it.

ETA limiting myself on the weekends is by FAR the hardest pregnancy restriction for me. I'm used to drinking it allllllllllllll morning and early afternoon.

  • I have a cup of decaf every morning. Decaf because I'm craving sugar so badly that I don't need to be bouncing off the walls.

  • I have one cup in the morning, between 7-10 oz. Sometimes I only end up drinking half of it, but I enjoy it. Recently, it also really helps make the headaches go away

  • I drink about 2 cups a day and non caffinated herbal tea. I asked my doctor beforehand and he said it was fine.

  • I have my cup of coffee every morning at work. I need it to stay awake and to warm up. I thought I would be good and quit but I just couldn't do it. For a few weeks I could only take a few sips before it made me want to hurl but that has since subsided.

  • All you coffee drinkers are making me jealous! I am a HUGE coffee lover, but my m/s and aversions still won't let me drink coffee. Just the smell is enough to make me gag at the moment. I used to drink about 5 cups a day, but if my aversion goes away, I'll probably just stick to one cup a day.

  • I tried to quit and started getting headaches, my doc actually recommended I drink what I need to avoid withdrawal. So I make a 20 oz. 1/2 caf most mornings or go with a 12 oz. of regular when I really need it (like today). I don't always finish it, but I try to keep track in case I want something else that has caffeine later in the day.

  • I'm not a coffee drinker, but I love Dr. Pepper. This is an article that you may find useful: https://www.webmd.com/baby/news/20100721/moderate-coffee-drinking-ok-in-pregnancy

Most OBs will tell you that it's fine in moderation. You can ask yours if you are having doubts. I wouldn't worry about a moderate amount of caffeine.

  • I have two cups a day. One first thing in the morning and a second during nap time.

I use the K-cups. I'm not sure how many ounces each cup is, but it's pretty standard...probably 8.

I drank a lot more caffeine when I was pregnant with DS. I was just so exhausted all.the.time. It's funny because I continued to drink my normal amount of coffee when I was nursing him because I figured he was already used to it. ;)

Needless to say, he never seemed to have any sleeping problems as a result of drinking caffeinated breast milk!

  • Every now and then I crave an iced caramel macchiato from Starbucks so DH will get it for me. But it's usually once a week on his home office days lol
  • Yes - I have a latte 3-5 x per week.  They have less caffeine than regular drip.
  • I have been drinking decaf which has been satisfying my need for something warm to drink in the mornings. But I think I will start drinking a bit of regular coffee again. I'm not personally comfortable with more than 1 cup/day, but after no caffeine for months, that should be plenty for me, lol! I am dragging at the end of the day and I need the energy!

  • I actually gave up caffeinated coffee when finding out I was pregnant (Was WAY too addicted to the stuff). So I've just been doing decaf. Have you thought of getting some in case you crave a second cup? People very in what they say, some say 2 cups is fine. If you'd rather stay on the safe side, decaf tastes just as great without the caffeine.

  • I love coffee but I haven't had any since getting pregnant I thought it would be hard to give up but really giving up wine made me sadder than coffee. And I am pretty proud of myself I have given up soda as well. That was hard and I know the occasional one isn't going to hurt anything but I have always struggled to drink enough water my whole life so I am using this as an excuse to get myself drinking water regularly
  • Single shot grande toffenut nonfat latte 1x/day here! I skipped it yesterday morning and am still dealing with the headache I got.
  • I usually have 23 cans of diet pepsi a day. It has less than coffee and I go back and forth between working overnight and going to regular hours when I am off.... I need some
I did drink alot of coffee today because I worked 12 hour shift then had ti go to a work meeting for 5 hours after

  • I tend to rotate between a cup of decaf, a regular cup of coffee, or a hot cup of tea. Lately I have favoring the tea more, but I do enjoy the coffee, more for the taste than the caffeine.
