Surrogacy - where to get started

I decided a few years ago, I wanted to be a surrogate for someone.  I just gave birth to my second child, so I thought I would start doing some research now, at least to see if I am a good candidate, considering my history.  I have had a cesarean, but have since vbac.  Also, I had a second trimester miscarriage, but it was something wrong with the fetus, not my uterus, which I wouldn't think is an issue, since I do not plan on doing egg donation.  Any advice on where to start?

Re: Surrogacy - where to get started

  •  Thank you for all your help.  I didn't even think of the fact it may not be legal in my state!

And i apologize for  the way I worded things about  my loss.  I didn't mean my tone the way it came out.  I just was trying to finish my post, my dd needed something, I couldn't think of better wording, I was just trying to state it was not my uterus, chromosomal abnormalities wasn't popping up into my mind. Believe me, I am still heartbroken about the loss of my baby, I grieve him every single day.  And quite frankly, I am a bit bitter this week as I just had the anniversary of my loss.

  • Are you in MD, I believe it is legal there.  Definitely read everything you can get your hands on, I love surromomsonline.com and allaboutsurrogacy.com to get real life experiences.  Agency websites are great, but they give very little information in the grand scheme of things.  Are you considering carrying for someone you already know or for someone you've not yet met?  If you decide to go through an agency, you can choose any agency, it doesn't have to be one that's close to you.  Is your DH onboard, how about the rest of your family?  Are you finished having your own children?  While it's not a requirement that you be finished, it's HIGHLY advised by pretty much everyone in surrogacy, I know of a specific surro that was carrying for someone so she could have money to get a tubal reversal, around 15w she lost the baby and had to have an emergency hystorectomy.  You can go independent, but I liked the security of an agency, they're there to make sure that everything's getting done that needs to (I'm in MO, it's a little harder here for the IP's to get LEGAL custody of their baby than in other states but not too much of a pain as long as things are done as they should be).  The agency I'm with is also holding the escrow, it's nice that I don't have to talk to the IP's about money.  Feel free to PM me with any questions you may have.
