Today, the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and many other organizations announced they have joined the CHOOSE WISELY campaign, drawing national attention to the overuse and misuse of induction of labor. ACOG and AAFP are telling women and their maternity care providers:
- Don?t schedule elective, non-medically indicated inductions of labor or cesarean deliveries before 39 weeks 0 days gestational age.
- Don?t schedule elective, non-medically indicated inductions of labor between 39 weeks 0 days and 41 weeks 0 days unless the cervix is deemed favorable.
This is an announcement from the ACOG President.

Funny you post this. I'm going to be 39 weeks Saturday and I was told yesterday at the doc that they will not induce me before 40 weeks because of my unfavorable cervix. So some doctors do follow this.
I just need LO to cooperate and make her way down!!!
This has actually been the guideline for the last 7-8 years. Some MDs just don't follow and often it was because patients would throw a fit once they were "tired of being pregnant". So many docs would give in. I think ACOG is just trying to reiterate their recs now.
I'm sure they have. Just like they make continued statements about macrosomia not being a legitimate reason for an induction... but doctors still suggest it. And mom's still go for it. I'm sure they're hoping about it making news again will have doctors rethink it and more importantly, help mothers to be informed.
