ACOG and AAFP makes a statement against elective inductions

Today, the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and many other organizations announced they have joined the CHOOSE WISELY campaign, drawing national attention to the overuse and misuse of induction of labor. ACOG and AAFP are telling women and their maternity care providers:

- Don?t schedule elective, non-medically indicated inductions of labor or cesarean deliveries before 39 weeks 0 days gestational age.
- Don?t schedule elective, non-medically indicated inductions of labor between 39 weeks 0 days and 41 weeks 0 days unless the cervix is deemed favorable.

This is an announcement from the ACOG President.

  • What does it mean for the cervix to be favorable?

  • That's fantastic.  Hopefully people will pay attention to it.

  • Great development! Thanks for sharing
  • Yes! Makes me mad doctors don't already follow this. Mine wanted to induce me (prev pregnancy) just days after my due date. Thank goodness he came on his own a few days 'early', and thankful I'm more informed this time around.

  • Funny you post this. I'm going to be 39 weeks Saturday and I was told yesterday at the doc that they will not induce me before 40 weeks because of my unfavorable cervix. So some doctors do follow this.

  • I was almost induced at 39w with DS#1 because he was "big" (he ended up being 8 lbs 0 oz, so not big).  Luckily my water broke just hours before, so I didn't go through with it.  I did not know any better, however, and was just trusting my docs.  This time I won't agree to an induction for this reason.   I was already dilated and effaced with #1, so I guess I was "favorable", but still.

  • This has actually been the guideline for the last 7-8 years. Some MDs just don't follow and often it was because patients would throw a fit once they were "tired of being pregnant". So many docs would give in. I think ACOG is just trying to reiterate their recs now.

  • I thought they've made that public statement before?  I know in my state a year and a half ago they had a huge campaign with a bunch of commercials and billboards about not inducing or scheduling a c-section before 39 weeks of gestation.

  • I'm sure they have. Just like they make continued statements about macrosomia not being a legitimate reason for an induction... but doctors still suggest it. And mom's still go for it. I'm sure they're hoping about it making news again will have doctors rethink it and more importantly, help mothers to be informed.

  • And yet I continue to read posts by women who are so bored and tired of pregnancy that they are requesting to be induced! Don't they realize that babies can't stay inside forever? Eventually they will come out all on their own (excepting instances that require C-sections, obviously). And the whole point of letting pregnancy run to term is to allow baby to mature enough to be ready for survival outside the womb! Ugh. I know I'm preaching. Sorry. I just get so mad about people who are more concerned with their own comfort than the health and safety of their babies.
