If you EBF...XP

I also posted this to AP board:

If you EBF, how long did you give only BM?  When you did start solids, and what were the signs you were looking for?

My twins will be 5 months on Monday, and we are still EBF.  I'd like to go as long as possible (definitely past six months), and just curious other MoMs handle it.  I know DH is anxious for them to start eating food so that we are not wholly reliant on my breasts, but I've read that the sooner you start them on solids, the sooner they start to wean.  My goal is to BF for one year minimum.

They are gaining weight fine and are getting lovely chunky and wobbly bits, but they still normally eat every three hours, even at night.  (and the past couple of nights, they've been alternating every hour...fun times)

Anyone else in the same situation?

  • We started DS1 on solids around 4.5 months b/c MH was going to be gone for a few months and wanted to see his first taste of food.  He didn't love it, and we gave up until around 6 months.   With DS2 I waited until 5-6 months just because I think the early days of solid feeding are a PITA.  By 7 months both of them were getting solids several times a day and liked them, but they were definitely not a source of primary nutrition until closer to a year. I weaned both of them between 14-15 months and I was the one who initiated weaning both times.

I expect we will start solids with my twins right around 6 months as well, but I only plan to nurse them for a year.  We'll see how it goes, though.

  • I've only done it with my singleton, but our pediatric GI told us that all of the current research indicates that the most optimal time to start solids is not before 4 months, but not after 6 months, especially for allergies. We started ds at 4.5 months in a desperate attempt to keep my bm down. It wasn't until we went to the GI that he was diagnosed with mspi, and he was like a new baby. I continued to nurse him until he was a year while on the mspi diet. I weaned him at a year because we knew we were going to try to get pg again soon and I wanted a little break. Little did I know that he would outgrow it at 15 months. He would have kept nursing if I had let him though. We will probably start these babies on solids at 5 months depending on readiness.

And, btw, it is very encouraging to me that you're ebf your twins. This is one of the things I worry about the most.

  • I EBFed and we started solids at 5 months.  I would probably wait until 6 if I had it to do over again, only because I found feeding solids to be a giant pain and something I wish I had put off!

The boys nursed for 14 months and weaned on their own.

  • Thanks ladies! This is good insight. It's hard to believe we are almost to that point...eep!
