Cloth Diapering

Low budget choices?

CD in general is better for the budget, I know. However, I have to get some more diapers before baby arrives in a few weeks. I have been put on a more restricted schedule at work, so my budget has shrunk considerably.

What do you experienced cd mamas think of econobum? Are there good, yet less expensive options out there?

If somebody thinks they're a hedgehog, presumably you just give 'em a mirror and a few pictures of hedgehogs and tell them to sort it out for themselves.-Douglas Adams

  • Kawaii and Alva are good budget brands for pockets.

I haven't used either of those but I have them both. I always see good reviews about them. They seem to be popular.

  • I actually quite like the econobum cover, but the prefold/insert is just plain weird. It's too bulky for a young baby and not really wide enough for an older baby. Neither cover nor insert will fit a newborn.

eta: I also love the Kawaii square tab velcro diapers that others have mentioned.

  • I recommend getting Small Birds Eye Flats from Green Mtn. Diapers and Thirsties Duo Size 1 covers. $11-12 for 6 flats, $12.25 for solid colored Duo covers at GMD. Very economical and won't drown a NB! Plus you can use the flats all the way to potty training :)

I have some econobum.  I don't like the cover but I like the prefolds.  They are meant to be trifolded in a cover.  Now that my baby is older they fit him great.  They are a little thicker than other prefolds but I think that's what make them good for an older baby who wets more.  For a newborn I would go with GMD or osocozy like someone else suggested.  I also use Thirsties covers.

  • We use flats with Thirsties covers (among other covers) and I far prefer them to our pocket diaper. Very affordable.
  • I have one econobum cover and use it with my Flip inserts sometimes... it works simliar to a flip, but I could care less for the prefold that is suppose to go in it.

  • We just started CD. I don't want to spend a TON of money since DD is getting close to potty training. I have found a lot of gently used diapers on ebay. We have 11 right now. 3 Kawaii and the rest are fuzzibunz. They are all in excellent condition and the most I paid was $8 a diaper. I also got some as low as $5.

  • I am CD baby #3 and I still reach for prefolds about 75% of the time.  I find them trimmer than most other diapers and they work really really well.  My favorite covers are Thirsties.  You can diaper very economically by choosing prefolds.  I have actually had more redness from pockets (although I generally only use BG pockets for overnights so I assume it is because they are in them for so much longer).  I never have to worry about stink/buildup with my prefolds, but pockets/microfiber can be tricky.

This. The prefold is downright awkward. The cover is pretty roomy, which makes it great to use over fitteds.
