Weight gain?

Hi Ladies,

Hoping that you can help me get an idea of what is normal weight gain. I stopped running after my BFP and am wondering if my weight gain is mostly due to the fact that I've been eating a ton and exercising less (if that's the case, I want to take steps to correct it to stay healthy).

I'm 9 weeks pregnant with twins and am 5'8 with a pre-preg weight of 127. I've gained about 6 lbs so far and cannot button any of my pants. I'm already in maternity leggings. I swear I'm starting to show, but I cruise the boards and see it's likely just bloat.

Does my weight gain sound on target, or is it time for me to stop indulging my sweet tooth and start ramping up my exercise? I saw this other OBGYN at my practice the other day (my doc was out) and she said a twin preg should still not result in more than 25-35 lbs gain total and 1-5 in first tri. That doesn't sound right to me...thoughts?

Re: Weight gain?

  • I didn't gain any weight in my first tri due to severe ms. My weight gain since 14 weeks has been a steady 1-2lbs a week and I'm now up 27lbs and my OB is very happy with that. 25-35 seems really low for a person with normal body weight. If you were obese prepreg I could understand but I expect you'll gain more than that. I've seen some ladies on here say they gained 60 and lost it all within 6 wks PP. The biggest issue is gaining a ton at once. Not only is it harder on your body to adjust but you want to keep the babies gaining steadily as well.

    Congrats on your twins!

  • That does seem a little on the low side for your height/weight.  I am 5'4 and was 128 pre-pregnancy.  I'm 26.5 weeks and up 29lbs.  My OB said I should expect to gain 30-40lbs...but I think the average is usually 35-45lbs.  I gained 30lbs, with son.
  • Before becoming pregnant I was training to run my first 10k then half marathon in the plans but I was a little overweight about 190 and I am 5'9" with an athletic build. In the first 10 weeks I didn't gain anything my OB had no problems with it. She said I should gain around 45-60 pounds but as long as the babies are healthy to not worry about it. At this point I am 19 weeks and only gained about 8 pounds.
  • I'm 5'8" as well and was about 145 pre-pregnancy.  Just like I did with my first, I gained close to ten pounds in the first trimester.  I thought I was on the road of gaining way too much, but my OB kept telling me women gain pregnancy weight at different times and stages.

With my singleton, I gained 33 pounds and had a nine pound baby girl.

This time around given that history, my OB told me I should gain about 45 pounds.  Just like the last pregnancy, I put on close to ten in the first trimester and easily hit the 24 pounds by 24 weeks mark.  Now, I'm 32 weeks and have gained 34 pounds, which my doctor says is great.

That's probably a long way of saying, don't project out weight gained based on the rate you gain in the first trimester.  At one point this time around I thought I was gaining too much, so I scaled back my mid-afternoon snack from a yogurt and granola parfait, almonds and cookie to just the almonds and cookie.  I was waking up in the middle of the night starving.  Your body will tell you what it needs.

  • I think they accidentally told you the weight gain recommendation for a singleton. They did that with me at first, said 25 lbs I'm considered 15 to 20 lbs overweight and I said, "For twins??" And then she said, "Oh, oops, No! About 50." So no more than 50 for me.
  • I'm 11 weeks and have lost 2 lbs due to MS, but I'm sure I'll catch up real quick! :
  • hi my pre-pregnancy weight was 128. i gained 50 lbs, most of it in the last trimester and i think a lot of it was fluid. i drank a TON of water throughout my pregnancy.
  • Thanks ladies! I've decided to continue eating whenever I'm hungry, but to reach for the fruit instead of the girl scout cookies. I'm also going to force myself to walk on my treadmill daily and up my water intake!

That OB is wrong! You should gain from 35-45lbs with a twin pregnancy. You can look up the recommendations online and I would definitely let that OB know about your research. Gaining more weight is favorable with twin pregnancy because there space is going to be limited already and gaining more weight helps with that. Plus the babies have a big chance of being small already and adding more protein to your diet is important for baby growth and placenta health. I exercise by walking 2.5mi a day which is a big reduction from what I did pre-pregnancy but I find I'm a bit more tired with this pregnancy obviously. I still eat healthy, exercise and get lots of rest whenever I can. GL to you mama, hope this helps.
