CD in general is better for the budget, I know. However, I have to get some more diapers before baby arrives in a few weeks. I have been put on a more restricted schedule at work, so my budget has shrunk considerably.
What do you experienced cd mamas think of econobum? Are there good, yet less expensive options out there?

I haven't used either of those but I have them both. I always see good reviews about them. They seem to be popular.
I actually quite like the econobum cover, but the prefold/insert is just plain weird. It's too bulky for a young baby and not really wide enough for an older baby. Neither cover nor insert will fit a newborn.
eta: I also love the Kawaii square tab velcro diapers that others have mentioned.
I have some econobum. I don't like the cover but I like the prefolds. They are meant to be trifolded in a cover. Now that my baby is older they fit him great. They are a little thicker than other prefolds but I think that's what make them good for an older baby who wets more. For a newborn I would go with GMD or osocozy like someone else suggested. I also use Thirsties covers.

This. The prefold is downright awkward. The cover is pretty roomy, which makes it great to use over fitteds.
