DS getting arm out of Swaddle Me and waking...

DS had to be swaddle to move into crib. I've been swaddling him a couple weeks. Yesterday he learned to get one arm out and cries because he beats himself in the head. He still needs to be swaddled...any suggestions? I use the Swaddle Me because I have never been old at swaddling with a blanket, I just can't do it. Should I try the next size up, or has anyone used those things that are shaped like a peanut shell and zip up the front? It's like a fitted sack and their arms are zipped in too?

Last night I had to get up to stuff his arm back in. not a huge deal, but i dont want to have to start doing this multiple times a night in addition to his two night feedings. Thanks!

Re: DS getting arm out of Swaddle Me and waking...

  • We recently started weaning DS off his swaddle as he can roll now and I dont want him rolling and not having his arms free to push his head up or get himself back over.

Before the weaning process, we were in the same boat as you. I couldnt find any SwaddleMe's that would fit him (he was roughly 15ish lbs or so) so I ended up getting a Swaddle Me/Sleep Sack combo. They are larger than just the regular swaddle me's. You could always try that?

Since birth, we used the escape proof method of swaddling him and there was absolutely.no.way he could get his arms out. (you can find a video of it on YouTube) However, I knew I was going to wean soon so I stopped the escape proof part of our swaddling but continued to swaddle with the swaddle me/sleep sack. (I hope that makes sense) Eventually, he was able to get his arms out, or seemed frustrated and would wake himself trying to fight to get his arms out. And all at the same time he learned to roll, so thats when we decided to start weaning.

Sorry for the rambling, hopefully that makes sense? Basically, our next step was the Sleep Sack/Swaddle Me combo. :)

thanks I do have one I will try, I also ordered a Woombie, too. DS is a big boy...19 pounds and not even four months LOL.

  • Try the halo sleep sacks. They are much longer and wider but have a shoulder shrug for swaddling. Also very good for weaning a baby out of swaddling as you can do one arm out or both arms out but still tighten the middle so they feel snug

  • I second the Halo SleepSack. We have started weaning and currently swaddle with one arm out.

Yup, this is the sleep sack/swaddle combo we have. DS is over 17lbs now and it fits him just fine! Now that we have weaned him from the arm swaddle, we can still wrap his chest tightly with this.

  • I went cold turkey with the swaddle as she was waking herself up trying to fight it so much.  There was a lot of crying but within a few nights she had learned to sleep with her hands free and immediately began to roll over and become so much more mobile! WIsh I would have done it sooner
  • Maybe try the Zipadee-Zip... it's for exactly this... I have one for my daughter, and she loves it...

Why does he HAVE to be swaddled? We stopped at 3 months old. If he's breaking out then he's done being swaddled. You could try a sleep sack (which we used for a while) but it will take time for him to get used to waking himself up and putting himself back to sleep. It's a hard transition for them when their arms are out and they startle themselves which wakes them up but after a few nights he will get the hang of it.

because he still flails and startles himself. He also rakes his hands over his head and in the morning his face and hands would be bloody. I only started swaddling recently since he started screaming as soon as he was put down in his bed. Swaddling solved that and wa only way he would transition to crib as well.

We used a Woombie until about a month ago. It really helped DS.

With DD, we just sewed up the arms of a regular sleep sack when she outgrew the newborn zip-up SwaddlePod. It wasn't super tight, but she couldn't whack herself in the face, either. We also had to modify the length to keep it from covering her face with both arms in.

  • We used the SwaddleMe for awhile and I was worried about trying to wean him from it eventually. One night DH put him down without it and I was so mad thinking, "great, now I will have to wake up in the middle of the night when he wakes himself up flailing around." But he didn't. I then realized that he could sleep without it. I started just putting him in a sleep sack and he has been fine. He still flails around a bit but I don't think that he wakes up because of it. HTH.
