High-Risk Pregnancy

XP from June 2013: High Risk OB appointment ?

I am a third time mom but this Tuesday will be my first ever experience with a high risk OB (actually, my first time ever with an OB since I have only EVER seen midwives for prenatal, delivery and postnatal care.) We are having a level 2 ultrasound and high risk consult due to LO possibly having kidney issues and me having placenta issues. I'm wary/nervous enough about these issues so would like to be prepared for the appointment. Can anyone tell me something of what to expect? TIA!

  • It will be very similar to any other non-ob doctors appointment. The High risk ob's generally do not do pelvic exams. Likely, they will take you back to the ultrasound room where the ultrasound tech will perform the ultrasound. It will be similar to the other ultrasounds you have had probably with extra attention to the kidneys. Then the Dr will come in and talk to you about your health history find out about the pregnancy and prior pregnancies. After which the doctor will explain the situation from their point of view and the issues or non-issues. Very much like a normal doctors appointment. No big surprises. I have been to the High risk specialists more than 30 times...no bigger deal than the pediatrician. Good Luck!

  • I agree with pp it's not too different but maybe a bit more involved information wise. In most cases you get a more detailed ultrasound and if you have to come in more frequently once diagnosis is determined you'll get to see your LO more on the plus side. I would get some questions ready for your visit just so you can leave feeling well informed but try not to get sucked into google. GL with your appt.
