Gender reveal dinner?

I have told most of my family that we are meeting at a local pizza restaurant for dinner and I will reveal the baby's gender. We have the ultrasound on Monday. I figured from what I read so far that I just hand the tech a paper and pen to write the gender down, stick it in an envelope and... ?

How should I reveal? Cake, box of balloons or simply open the envelope and read the gender out to everyone.

What did you do if you did a gender reveal party?

Re: Gender reveal dinner?

  • Well....we just had both of our parents come over (under false pretenses), so they didn't even know what was going on.  We had our tech tell us at the appointment though so it was just a surprise for them.

I really wanted to do the balloons b/c I just think that looks awesome...unfortunately, didn't work as I planned.  My DH and I even practiced...we would put the balloons in and make sure that they came out (and didn't get stuck, etc).  We thought we had it perfected, and then when they actually did it....it didn't work right :(  We put 2 pieces of tape on the lid....having them meet in the middle so each of our mom's could pull the tape.  After that, we thought the lids would fly open...but they just stayed there.  My DH had to lift one real quick so the balloons would come out.  LOL

So maybe do the cake since it would be hard to mess up?  I would at least do cake or balloons or something...don't just read it, more fun to do something :)

  • Cake would be cute since you are doing a dinner. I would stay away from the box of balloons, unless you are going to be outside.

  • We just did this! We actually bought a girl and boy onesie and asked the u/s tech to put one in a gift bag that we supplied then wrap the other one up in a bag so we couldn't see. She loved the idea and was more than helpful and it didn't take any of her time, which was my concern. I'm not big on parties and etc, but having our family there for this was a blast b/c we all were for sure it was a girl and I'm having another boy!! So to see everyone's reaction was hilarious, including our's! We just had parents and our sisters there. Have fun!
  • I'm doing a dinner with immediate family and I'm doing a cake with colored filling.

    I love my rainbow baby!

  • We're doing dinner with my parents after our appointment next week, and I've told them that we'll be dressed in either pink or blue, depending... so when they get to the restaurant, they'll see us in either colour. My parents both have severe food allergies, so finding someone to make a cake that they could actually eat would be a bit of a nightmare.

  • MH and I will be finding out at the appointment, but we ordered two dozen cupcakes, half wth pink and half with blue filling.  That way we can pick them up the day of the ultrasound rather than wait five more days after putting in our order.

We plan on stopping at each person's house in our immediate family and giving them their cupcakes, and when the bite into it, they'll know the sex.

Do you plan on finding out at the appt or with the rest of your guests?  Either way you could give the waiter the envelope and ask for a pink or blue drink for everyone (call ahead to make sure they can accomodate whichever you choose) or maybe a dessert or something.

You could take the envelope to a bakery and have a cake made, when you cut into it the color of the cake will reveal the sex.  However keep in mind, like our cupcakes you'd have to place the order the day you get the results from the U/S so you wouldn't be able to do the reveal under several days later or however long the bakery takes.

Another idea is to take bets from everyone at dinner, and then just open the envelope and announce.  Whether you want to provide some kind of prize for the winners is up to you, or just let them have bragging rights that they guessed correctly.

  • Blue pepperoni on the pizza!
Just kidding, but it would be fun to tie in the pizza.
  • My husband and I invited a bunch of friends and my parents over to our house (we got his parents who live in FL on Facetime). We had the bakery that did our wedding cupcakes make a cake with the colored filling.

Everyone was really excited that we did it that way and that we were finding out with them.

  • Once we know, we're doing the cake reveal. If you get it made at a bakery, you have to wait a few days, like PP said. I'm impatient so I will probably make it myself. A box of Duncan Hines/Betty Crocker strawberry if girls, white with blue food coloring if boys. (We know they're identical already, so it's one or the other.)

  • Sausage for boy?
