Make my child poop!!

It's been a week and a half since her last poop. Last night she was up 7 times because she is so constipated. We have tried everything with no luck (prune juice, apple juice, massage, warm baths, bicycling legs, etc) Every time I call the pedi, they tell me it's normal for a BF baby to not poop for up to two weeks. I'm sorry but that should not be considered normal EVER!

We go for her 6 mo app tomorrow. They will probably brush it off. Or she will poop on the way there. Either way UGHHH. Any other mamas with constipated babies have advice?

  • Besides juice, is she eating solids? Or still ebf?

  • Have you tried a probiotic? Liam's had one every day for the last 4 months and it works so well!

  • Put some vaseline on a qtip and put it in her butt. Lol. I've heard it works wonders.

  • We also have been doing probiotics for 4 months. We use BioGaia. You can find it in the baby aisle at Walgreens. It won't make your LO poop now, but it will over time improve the digestion.

I may get flamed for this, but my pedi even recommended it when DS was in pain. Try a glycerin suppository. Cut it into a small piece, melt it a little between your fingers, then gently push it up. If anything is backed up, your LO will go within the hour.

  • We went through this at Christmas and my pedi recommended an oz of warm water 1-2 times a day to help. It worked for us. Good luck! It was a tough time.

we used biogaia until last month and then switched to a powder from our grocery store which works just as well but  isn't as pricey.

  • I'm sorry girl. Emery was/is the same way.  Now he's going every 7ish days (I stopped keeping track, it was making me pull my hair out) on his own, without assistance and unprompted.  For a month or so we had to use glycerin suppositories.  Then prunes really helped and they still seem to help.  I know it feels wrong but as long as the poop isn't hard or dry when she finally goes, it really is "normal, esp if she's bfed.

Ooooh, so was it just the generic store brand? And specifically for babies? I might need to try it.

That's what we switched to - there are guidelines for children under 2. Hope it helps!

  • I'm so sorry your baby is going through this! I can't believe the Dr says it's normal! I don't have anything you can try that you haven't already just wanted to show my support. Hope your LO poops soon!

I thought BM was supposed to be the easiest food for a baby to digest. Guess not! Do you pure your own prunes or buy?

It is!  And Emery was ebf when the problem started for him.  LLL and Kellymom.com and various other bfing sources say breastmilk is better digested because it's so formulated to your baby's needs there's less to poop out.  But when Em poops now after going a week+ it's HUGE.  Not hard, but a huge amount.

I just buy the organic puree from the health food store.  I didn't want to deal with pureeing my own b/c of the skins.  It works for us!  Hth.

Hmm that's interesting! Yeah I didn't think of the skin part. Buying will be easier. Thanks!

  • Do this..  take 2 ounces of water and 1 tsp of brown sugar and mix in a bottle.  If she wont take a bottle- use a syringe.  she will poop within the hour- My pedi told me this! (I EBF DD as well)

B poops daily. Bananas made him constipated for 4 days and pureed prunes didn't help. I did the qtip thing and poop came out right away. Worked like charm.
  • As recommended by my pedi. Warmed diluted prune juice or water helps the intestines to contract, which helps make them poop.  If all else fails, children's glycerin suppository in small pieces (but should only be given as a last resort and once).

Poor baby... hope she feels better soon.

  • I'd be at the ER right now!! I give the twins prunes twice a day to avoid that. Also you can mix pear juice in baby cereal or stimulate them with Vaseline on a thermometer.
  • Before DS started solids he would go 10 days between poops and it never bothered him. Our pedi also said it was normal for exclusively breast feed babies to go for long periods without having a bowl movement and not to worry about it unless the baby was showing signs of distress. Since your baby is obviously distressed, it is not normal.

I have heard that glycerin suppositories can help, just don't use them on a regular basis. For my DS any green vegetable and especially green beans make him poop.
