C-sections

Just curious....GTKY

How many of us here had a c/s due to failed induction?  I know other things factor in, but I'm curious how many of us on here had an induction as part of their process!!

Did your doctor's mention it was a failed induction?  Mine just said I was too small and that he flipped to be sunny side up. And the report that went on my medical leave papers just said threatened Pre-E (which I didn't have.....)

  • Mr dr. never mentioned it being a failed induction but in my mind it was. I was induced on a monday night and didn't have DS1 until Wednesday afternoon. Now I did take forever to progress but the only reason I was told I was having a c-section was because I was too tired to push(was fully dialated when they wheeled me into OR). Now before they decided to do the section my blood pressure dropped and his heart rate dropped but they got us stabilized. They did not tell me that was why I was having it they told me to my face I was having it because I was too tired to push. I should have pushed them to let me try but after almost 48 hours in the hospital I was just wanting my child to be born and not have any complications.

I was induced on a t Tuesday night and he didn't come until very very early on Thursday morning, so I share your same thinking.
I can't believe THEY told YOU that you were too tired. And I know what you mean about just wanting him to be out and in your arms.

  • Nope. My cord failed around 26w and they noticed at my 28w4d appointment because Aidan wasn't measuring correctly and they noticed my cord not allowing blood flow. They did an emergency c/s that day.

  • Sort of... not sure if we gave it long enough to consider it "failed." I was induced due to pre-e, 12 hrs on Cervidil, and all the next morning on pit and cervix still hadn't opened past barely fingertip opening. Meanwhile my BP was still quickly rising, platelets low, protein in urine, and once I started having blurred vision and floaters my dr wasn't going to wait any longer to put me on magnesium. Apparently that works against the pit, which already wasn't working so we decided it would be safer to go ahead and just get her out. I'm glad we did, my BP stayed dangerously high for several more days and I was pretty sick, but no permanent damage and she was healthy so that's all that mattered to me.

  • No induction for me.  My water broke on its own.  8 hours later, I had zero contractions, and she was still firmly planted in my ribs.  Between various risk factors I already had, adding Pitocin would bump my chances for a c-section up to 40%.  I decided that I'd rather have major surgery when my body was rested rather than after Lord knows how long of full on labor.  Never once do I wish I would have had it any other way. :)

  • They started the induction process on me on a Wednesday night. I never progressed even in the slightest. My cervix was still high and closed so we ended up with a c/s. We found out during the surgery that I wasn't progressing because she never dropped, was breech and high up in my ribs still. I delivered at 40w4d.

  • I wasn't induced, I went into labor on my own with regular contractions from the very start. 17 hours later they broke my water and 4 hours later my contractions were every minute and I asked for the epi and I was checked and made no progress. I was giving pitocin and they ran that and increased it to the max amount for several hours until the next day and I was still only 2 cm. At that point DD was still in my belly but my belly was laying on the bed beside me while I was still on my back and would not descend into my pelvis. And we decided with the OB after more then 30 hours it was time for a section as I had a major fever. When they did the procedure they determine my pelvis was very narrow but also my scoliosis tilted my pelvis too far left for baby to descend.

I think the induction medication was mentioned in the report but the reason was the scoliosis and narrow pelvis (I forget the acronym/term used)

wow that is crazy!  I had the opposite thing happen.... After about three hours of pushing in all kinds of positions I told them I was too tired to go on!  And even then my doc was trying to persuade me to keep going.  It turns out my daughter was OP, big, and having a hard time descending.  My doc told me later he thinks I made a good choice, lol.

OP, I went into labor on my own at 40 w 2 days and didn't even have any pitocin for my entire labor.

  • I was induced and progressed well. My son was tangled in his cord and could not descend not just looped around the neck, but actually stuck.
  • I was induced on a Monday morning around 7:30am and around 2pm I stopped making progress.  My Doctor let me continue to try and make progress until about 5:30/6pm when she "called it" and said that I'd need a c-section because "Baby was getting tired."

I was having blood pressure issues too and was confined to bed all day so I know she was worried about my BP too.

  • I went into labor on my own, and my water broke on it's own. They started me on Pitocin as soon as I got to the hospital, though, because I'd been in labor for awhile and not progressed.

My official reason was "failure to progress" and because my water had been broken 24+ hours. Failure to progress was most likely due to DS not being positioned well.

Funnily enough, I had been scheduled for an NST, OB consult and US that Friday because I was 9 days overdue. The OB who delivered DD was the one I was scheduled to see in the consult earlier that day.

same here, I had my 40 wk appt scheduled for the exact time I had my c-section, with the same doc.  I remember glancing at the clock and thinking, 'well since I was booked for now, that's one less patient in the waiting room'.  DD was born the week after Christmas and they basically had a skeleton crew going.  My doc was the only one there for at least part of the week.

  • I was induced at 41 weeks. It was awful. I labored all night long, my epidural quit working, he wouldn't come out, I had to wait for the on call anesthesiologist to finish another case because it was a Sunday night....on full blown pitocin with full blown contractions. It was torture. Then I get to the OR, my spinal went too high and I couldn't breathe, then I had to be knocked out and intubated. My repeat csection was a breeze compared to that drama.

  • I had a 39 week doc appt and found out I had pre-E, Grade pitting edema if I remember what he said correctly. So I was sent for an induction the next day. My first dose of Cervidil around 10 with no progress at all! So I got the 2nd dose of Cervidil and it still didn't work, by then things were a blur and she said my cervix was not ripe. So they started Pitocin and I was contracting pretty regularly and I think I made it to 5 cm and by then was begging for my epi.  I got that and still labored and then everything happened so fast...doc came in and said that the babys heart rate was dropping with every contraction and it was time to 'think' about a C-section. So off I went and I thank God and the doc who made the call to do one because the cord was wrapped around her neck 3 times! Her little head and forehead was bruised so badly so she had been TRYING to get out but the cord was holding her back. Crying

  • I had an induction. I had fail to progress, so I don't know if that counts as a failed induction!

  • No induction here. My water broke naturally, but I never dilated past a 3. After Pitocin and 21 hours of zero progress, I had a CS.

  • I had a failed induction. I was in the hospital with pre-e and they decided it was time to induce. After two days, two rounds of cervidil, a round of cytotec, and lots of pitocin, I was having regular, strong contractions but my cervix wasn't ripening at all. They gave me the choice of another night of cervidil or a csection. They really didn't want me to do the other night because of the pre-e so we went with the c-section.
