When to call doctor re: fever temp

Tucker has had a 101.6-102.7 temperature for about 24 hours now.  We've done fever reducer, cool bath, cool wash cloths, getting some cool fresh air and its not gone down.  When do you typically call your doctor about fever concerns?  What have we not tried that we should to try to break it?

  • I agree with others, call the pedi.  They probably wont be able to do much but it will help put your mind at ease.  I hope Tucker feels better soon.

  • I would call too.  When Em was running a fever with the pneumonia, they told us not to do cool baths or alcohol wipes because it could make her shiver, which would raise her temp.  They told us that the Tylenol wouldn't bring the fever down but would keep it from going higher.  Of course, every doctor has different advice, so who knows.  Andplusalso, I always thought Tylenol reduced fevers, so that sounded wonky to me.  Anyway, yeah, I would call and see what they tell you.

  • I'd second calling the doctor.  At least you'll get some reassurance, maybe some new ideas to drop the temperature, and the list of what to watch.  Fevers are scary, we just got over a 5 day sickness with high fevers (he hit 104.5).

I'd also ask if you can use ibuprofen (advil) over acetaminophen (tylenol).  Ibuprofen lasts longer (6-8 hours, acetaminophen is dose every 4-6 hours) - my son hates taking medicine so dosing less often goes much better.  I also found his fever responded better to ibuprofen.

  • i call at 102 rectal
