Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Feeding Schedule

We are starting with solids this weekend! Crazy excited, but I was wondering, how often do you feed them? We're starting with cereal for a week before introducing fruits and veggies, but should they eat some at every meal? Once a day?

Thanks!

Re: Feeding Schedule

  • It depends on how old your baby is.  At 4 months, they only need to eat a few tablespoons of cereal or solids once a day.  The cereal or solids are not meant to provide any nutrition.  Breast milk or formula should be their main intake until a year old.  The cereal or solids are only meant to teach them how to eat from a spoon!  I give my 4 month old cereal or baby food once a day between a feeding.  Just make sure you give them the same type of food for 3 days in a row just in case they have an allergic reaction!  Good luck and have fun with it!

  • We started solids a few weeks ago too - and our pedi said once a day - I'm not really sure when you start doing more than that but we have another appointment with her in 2 months and she said by then we will be up to twice a day.

  • We are starting this weekend also. I am a STM and I can't remember what our schedule was at this age. Interested in what others say.

  • My son is almost 5 months, his schedule is 6 oz of formula every 4 hrs. And for breakfast he has 2tbsp of rice cereal or oatmeal, with a 1/2 of a stage 1 gerber fruit. And for lunch he has his bottle plus 1/2 comgainer stage 1 veggie. And maybe a little bit of stage 1 meat by beachnut. So he only gets food 2 times a day. The dr said to gradually work ur way up to 3 times a day. And my lil boy can eat. But he's little only weighs 12 lbs. Lol good luck.
  • My little guy is will be turning 5 months on March 1. For the past 3 weeks I have been feeding him oatmeal or rice cereal twice a day; along with a bottle at each feeding. Whatever your baby is usually eating, I would keep the same and just introduce a little bit of solid at a time. My little one is on a 3-4 hr. feeding period. I will be introducing veggies soon, my Dr. said introduce veggies first and then fruits...I have heard the opposite as well, however, the Dr. said babies tend to dislike veggies if the sweet fruits are introduced first.
  • We're planning on skipping cereal altogether (there is really no nutrients from it at all), and we're starting with avocado. Sorry, that's not what you asked, just thought I would throw it in there.

I'm planning on starting once a day and then after a few days start adding another feeding of solids then. Does that make any sense? I'm not wanting to wean him off nursing just yet, so I don't want him to have too much, kwim?
