XP: Convertible Car Seat

DS is getting bigger, but I think we might be able to hold off on a new car set until he is closer to 1. I would like to get a 1 car seat that will take him through all the "stages" until he doesn't need a car seat anymore.

Any recos on a good (decently priced) convertible car seat? Are there convertible car seats that come with bases so that they can be easily transfered between cars? I would love to have the option of switching the car seat between DH's and my car. We are lucky that our sitter is our neighbor, so we don't have to drive to drop him off or pick him, up.

Are there car seats we should stay clear of as well?

TIA!

Re: XP: Convertible Car Seat

  • I don't think that there are any that will change bases-I could be wrong though. I have a seat for both my car & DHs car.  The seat for DHs car is not quite as nice because DS doesn't ride in it often. It's also a smaller seat for a smaller car.

There are a lot of seats out there that are good.  I have a Safety 1st Complete Air 65 for my car (that I won) which is great because it rear faces to 40 lbs.  It works great in a SUV RF, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone with a small car because the shell is so high.  It's also nice and puts DS to sleep. :)

I know Graco & Safety 1st both introduced a lot of new seats with extended RF limits that aren't very expensive.  I would start from there & maybe get a seat for each car that isn't super pricey (so your not moving the same seat around all the time). FWIW both of our seats RF to 40lbs-that way I can keep DS RF as long as possible.

Britax would be another brand I'd look at....but they are more expensive.

  • 1) You are going to need to buy another carseat for your LO at some point. The "all in ones" tend to make for unsafe boosters.

    2) Unless you want to keep installing and reinstalling your carseat, which is a PITA and creates a greater chance of installation error, you're going to need to get 2 convertible carseats.

  • Here are some seats I would recommend based on your criteria.

Graco Size4Me 70/MySize 70/Headwise 70: RF to 40lbs FF to 70lbs. You can get the Size4Me at Target for $179.99 or the Headwise for $199.99 Diono Radian R120: RF to 45lbs FF to 80lbs. You can get it for $199.99 with free shipping at Just Kids Store
Graco My Ride 70: RF to 40lbs FF to 70lbs. Retails at Target for $159.99
Evenflo Triumph 65 LX: RF to 40lbs FF to 65lbs. Retails at Albee Baby for $109.99
First Years True Fit: RF to 35lbs FF to 65lb. Retails at Albee Baby for $159.99 (Lamaze model).
I believe I put them in order of shell height (tallest to shortest) so depending on how tall your LO is, specifically in the torso, should also influence which seat to get.
EDIT: I forgot the Safety 1st Complete Air 65: RF to 40lbs FF to 65lbs. Retails at Albee Baby for $119.99

  • The prior poster gave you some good suggestions. FWIW, you will need to buy another seat. Most children are not physically ready to be out of a booster until 8-12 years old. They must past the 5 step in order to not use one. Plus, car seats expire. Your best bet is to go with a decently tall convertible now, and then move to a booster around 5-6 years old.

Ex: My daughter came home in a Graco Snugride, then moved to a rear-facing Britax Marathon until she was 3. She then moved into a Recaro ProSport, which she will ride in until she can move to a highback booster. I will be passing the ProSport onto my son, otherwise she could use that as a booster.

Stay clear of the Alpha Omega, Eddie Bauer 3-n-1 and the Graco Comfortsport.

  • There's actually a Graco on the market now that installs with a base like the infant seats, I want to say it's the Size4Me or something like that. You can google it and it will come right up.  I really wanted this seat but when I went to the store to check it out it was HUGE! It seemed a lot heavier and wider than any of the other seats so that took it off the list for me, but other than the size it seems to get great reviews.  The second base is around $80 and the seat I think is around $230 when it's on sale (I think it's $300-$330 regular priced but you can use BBB or Babies R Us coupons on it since it's a Graco), so it may not be cheaper than buying two seats depending on what you're looking at.

I ended up getting a semi-pricey seat (the Recaro ProRide) for my car since I do most of the transporting of DS and a cheaper Graco MyRide for DH's car.  So far my son seems to like the Graco just as well or better than the Recaro.  He LOVEs the cupholder on the Graco which makes me laugh because I thought it was kind of a silly feature, but he just loves putting stuff in it and taking it back out (but that's kind of his thing right now!) :)  The only knock I have on the Graco is the harness is a little more difficult to unbuckle, but that might be a good thing when DS gets a little older...

Its the Graco Smart Seat. It is not worth the money at all.
