Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Success with NCSS?

Hey ladies! Jumping ahead a few boards. We were blessed with a great sleeper with DS1....DS2 not so much! DS1 had some issues with naps but read Pantley's No Cry Nap Solution and it worked great! Just finished reading the No Cry Sleep Solution in hopes of helping DS2. Anyone have success with this before? How long did it take you before you saw results? I'm trying to get the courage to suck it up and do it!

Re: Success with NCSS?

  • We tried it with DS for about a week starting last Monday, and for him it only made the problem worse.  He went from cosleeping, waking every hour and nursing back to sleep to sleeping in his crib waking every half hour and needing to be rocked for 20 minutes before going down each time.

Maybe if we had given it more time we would have seen results, or maybe we were doing it wrong, but we were already at a point of desperation.  I had just gotten my BFP and no one in our house had had a decent night's sleep in 9 months.

We started Ferber on Sunday night and he has STTN since Monday.  Sunday night he cried for 2 hours, which was awful, awful, awful, but now he fusses for a minute or two and goes to sleep every time and even seems to enjoy his crib.

I have dug my heels in for 9 months about CIO techniques because I was convinced they were cruel, but in our situation I am now sure it was more kind to force him to learn to fall asleep on his own quickly than to continue bad habits any longer.  Like ripping off  band aid.

ETA:  Just noticed your LO is 4 months.  I think you may have better luck with NCSS at that age than we did.  Every baby is different, but I'm not sure I'd do Ferber with a baby much younger than my DS.

Thanks for your reply. I am certainly not opposed to a form of CIO, but definitely not at this age. I am hoping maybe some of the NCSS techniques will be helpful to us at this age. He went down last night awake in his crib. He didnt fuss or anything, just moved around and coo'd, for about 10 minutes, and then fell asleep. But he constantly woke up looking for a paci in the middle of the night. I guess I cant expect a miracle in one night! I will keep putting him down awake to hope it will eventually cross over to MOTN wakings.

Sounds like you've got a good plan.  I think next time around we will start looking at focusing more on teaching healthy sleeping habits earlier on with NCSS.
