STMs - did you water break or not? I have heard mixed reviews! TIA!!

Re: STMs - Did you water break?

  • Yes, it did break on its own. I had been laboring at home for most of the day when it happened.

  • The doctor broke mine in L&D

  • Yep. We spent the day in LD and decided to come home bc I was only 2.5 and felt relatively good. Made the 45 min trip home, pulled in the drive way, and said wouldn't it be funny if my water broke? I moved my leg to get out of the car and it was like a 5 gallon bucket was dumped down my front lol. He was born 3 hrs later.

  • Nope. Both times the doctor had to break mine right before I delivered and after hours of labor.
  • I had to be induced for DD#1 and the doctor broke my water about three hours into the induction.

For DD#2, my water broke on the toilet about three minutes before I started pushing.

  • Nope. Doc broke mine in the hospital.
  • With DS I had the midwives break it during my induction- we were 20+ hours into laboring and things were slowing down and I was maxed on pitocin and sure enough having my water broken got things moving FAST.

With DD it broke on its own but it was RIGHT before pushing. I was laying on my side laboring, I felt intense pressure, was convinced I was going to poop on the table but pushed through it and it wasn't poop it was my bulging bag of water. There was a super loud, audible pop when it broke and a huge gush of water and I reached down and could feel her head crowning lol

I think the statistic is that something like less than 15% of women have their water break at home as a sign of labor starting so if that is your concern I wouldn't worry too much. Most women either have it broken by their dr/midwife or it breaks during labor. My sister actually had a baby born "in the caul" which means he was born with his amniotic sac fully in-tact and they broke it and pulled him out once he was already outside of my sister. This is INCREDIBLY rare though :-)

  • Not with my first. Doctor broke it around 7-8 cm.

It did with my second, but no idea if the car accident 3 weeks before was the cause or not.

  • Yes my water broke in the middle of the night with my 2nd child.  Felt a pop which woke me up and ran to the bathroom leaving a trail behind. lol
  • Mine did I was induced and it broke about 45 hours after the induction started, extreme contractions from the cytotekbut no pitocin. I had a unique experience where I didn't dilate until after my epidural after water broke.

Short story broke on its own during labor.

  • Yes, before labor started.

  • Mine broke on it's own at home.

I was in pretty mild labor all night, regular contractions but not painful. Things slowed down in the morning and I got back in bed to try to get some rest and pop! It actually felt like she kicked or something and then water started leaking out every time I had a contraction, not a huge gush like some people get. The contractions got much more intense after that.

  • No, they broke my water.  They also said that the bag was extremely thick and he probably would have been born in the caul had they not broken it (which I think would have been cool).  After they broke my water, I labored for a few more hours and then when they did the next check to see where I was at, they ended up breaking a forebag that was apparently there as well- that really got things moving.

  • Yes at home. I didn't start feeling contractions until shortly after it broke. I asked the doctor today what the likelihood of it happening that way again was and he said that only 10% of women have their water break as an onset of labor.

  • Yes, mine broke on it's own but then stopped. 6 hrs later my DR re-broke it.
