Baby Names

What do ya'll think about the name Dorothy ?

My grandmother helped raise me when I was younger and she passed away last year .If I have a girl I wanted to name her after my grandmother .Some people say the baby will be made fun of because of Wizard of Oz. i went thru a rough first marriage and a ex boyfriend that was mean after my ex husband .I got married last year and now we are expecting a baby my hubby now is the greatest we get along so good ...

Re: What do ya'll think about the name Dorothy ?

  • I think it's very sweet. The Wizard of Oz references are inevitable, but I still like it.

My grandmother is Dorothy as well. She goes by Dot or Dora depending on who she's with. It's definitely on our long list for a girl.

  • I agree that you will get Wizard of Oz references, but I don't see the problem there.  (Other than it getting tiring).

Dorothy is a lovely name!  I love that you are honoring your grandma.

  • Its a name you like that has a great deal of meaning for you, so use it.  It's not like it's a negative reference.  She'll probably face a little bit of teasing but every kid does at one point or another.

You could always use it as a middle name instead if the teasing element bothers you.

  • I like it. No one will "make fun of" the Wizard of Oz. It's merely a reference.

What does your first marriage have to do with expecting a baby now. I would certainly hope you and your DH get along since you are having a child.

And it's well. You get along well.

  • I like Dorothy a lot and I love that it honors your grandmother.  I don't think the Wizard of Oz thing is bad.  My name is Juliet and I used to get the Romeo thing all the time, but, so what?

  • I like Dorothy. I could also see Thea working as a nn.

  • I like it, and I love the nn Dottie.

  • I love it. It's my grandma's name as well & I like that it has meaning to you. I agree with PP, you could always name her Dorothy & give her a NN.

ETA: Who cares about the Wizard of Oz stuff? I get Forrest Gump references all the time. It's a little annoying, but you get over it.

  • I think Oz too.

It's cute though, I wouldn't side eye it.

  • I love this name and am so glad it's gaining popularity again. Tyler Florence named his daughter this and I've met one other child named Dorothy in a grocery store line. Love it!

  • I think this name is going to start picking up in the next 10 years or so...not a ton, but I think people are going to notice it more.  I like the nns Dora and Dottie, but I'm not a fan of the name itself.

So glad I'm not the only one who was bothered by that.

Personally, I am not a fan of Dorothy or the nicknames associated with it. While I appreciate the personal significance it holds for you, the name itself is nms.

  • I love it and wish we hadn't used the name on one of our dogs because it would definitely be on our list for girl names. There are a few nickname choices, but I prefer Dottie.

Agreed. You may get the Wizard of Oz reference, but it won't be made fun of or used in a mean way!

  • I love "old lady" names, but I'm not a fan of this one. Perhaps as a middle name?
  • I love the NN Dot.

  • Love it! It's cute and sweet when they're little, but pretty and sophisticated when they're older. There are also alot of NN options...Dot, Dottie, Thea or Tia, etc. And the Wizard of Oz definitely isn't a bad thing to have your name associated with.
