Trouble TTC

TTC - Help!

My husband and I have been TTC for 1 year with no luck. I came off birth control January 2012 and for 6 months I didn?t get my period. My OBGYN gave me Provera to induce my period and started me on Clomid 100. I was on Clomid for 6 cycles with no luck but I did ovulate every time. My OBGYN recently sent me to a Fertility specialist who did additional testing and said I was fine except for one thing. When they did an ultrasound they said the Clomid thinned my lining and I only had 1 good follicle and he would like to see more. So they recommend to stop Clomid and start Femara. I have had the following test done which all came back normal: Hystoscopy, ultrasound (no cycsts), blood work (only Vitamin D was low) and genetic testing. My periods are a bit irregular (long cycles / approx. 35 ? 40 days) which my OBGYN suspects I have slight PCOS (even though I don?t have cycsts) but my fertility specialist says he?s convinced I do NOT have PCOS. My husband has had 2 semen analysis and we were told everything was normal except his morphology was 3% both times and they recommend between 6 ? 8%. My OBGYN said she wants that monitored but my fertility specialists say he?s not concerned at all. So again, a bit of conflicting information. While TTC I have been taking Prenatal vitamins, DHA, Vitamin D and Pregnitude. I would like to take a break from doctors and testing because it?s stressing me out. My question to everyone is do you have any tips on what we could do naturally to help us conceive? I recently bought Femaprin Vitex pills and Damiana Tea to add to my vitamin supply because I read good reviews on them. I should also mention my husband and I do not drink or smoke (he only does eCigs with a little bit of nicotine). We are not overweight but could lose maybe 5-10 more pounds in a perfect world. And we generally eat healthy though we are looking to improve that more. Fertility Specialist also suggested artificial insemination or IVF. At this time, our insurance does not cover it so we are not looking into that quite yet. Thanks for any advice in advance!

Re: TTC - Help!

  • I understand needing a break....

Trust your RE.. your OBGYN should have NEVER put you on Clomid without proper testing and monitoring. Ditch the OBGYN. Ask your RE before you take anything, as it could interfere with the fertility medicine you take.

Holy wall of text! Paragraphs are your friend. You will likely not find anyone here who is trying to go "all natural" as the majority of us here are on some type of IF medication and seeing an RE. When you say "fertility specialist" do you mean an RE? If not, that is the start to your problems.

    all this.

  • Yes, I saw an RE.
  • Thanks. The OBGYN need some monitoring and blood work when she put me on Clomid.  The RE just did more extensive testing.  I'll check with them on what I'm taking.
  • I actually tried Damiana tea for a few months when we first started TTC - suggested by my mother. I also tried Chinese herbs, acupuncture, pineapple core, robitussin, pomegranate juice, etc etc - everything I read or heard I did try.

I was diagnosed with unexplained infertility. We can try naturally but the chances a month are no longer 20% after a yr of trying my Dr informed me. We chose the IUI route and will move to IVF if necessary.

Good luck and welcome to this board.

  • I have unexplained infertility too.  The IUI route is only a 17% chance for me my doctor told me and will cost $6,000 for 3 tries.  I don't feel like paying $6k for the same percentage without IUI.  It looks like I'm doing everything like everyone else so we'll just have to wait and see.
  • It's okay to take a break if you need to.  I think everyone has a "stop the ride, I'd like to get off please" moment.  At least I know I did.  IF is tough, you have to take care of your health and sanity.

I does sound like your Ob/Gyn didn't do enough testing/monitoring.  That's nothing personal, most of them don't.  Her specialty is keeping you healthy during pregnancy, a RE's job is to get you pregnant.  It happens all the time.

IF treatments are stressful and expensive.  They're not right for everyone.  It also takes some time to wrap your head around the idea of it.  Take as much time off as you need.  Talk it over with your partner.  Look at all the options and factors (having a child, having a biological child, having a pregnancy, time, money, stress...).  Ask questions if you need to.  There's nothing wrong with continuing to try naturally if that's what makes the most sense right now.  It also doesn't make your struggle any less that someone who might choose a different path.

That being said, that's not where most of the women on this board are, and you won't find success stories here (Try PAIF).  For instance, I'm not trying naturally anymore because we have a medical diagnosis and there is a 0% chance of conceiving naturally.  My husband and I weighed our options and decided to pursue medical help because that's what was right for us.

After 12 months, the chances drop drastically, so it's no longer 20.

I personally hate playing the percentage game. In the real world some people get pregnant the time they lose their virginity, and some never get pregnant with no rhyme or reason. You just have to do what you feel comfortable with.

GL in whatever you decide to do, but most of us here are proactively seeking treatment.

If your RE told you your odds of success with IUI, did he/she tell you your odds of success with just going natural? Honestly I'd kill for a 17% chance with IUI, but I guess that's just me.

Also, what PP's have said. There's nothing wrong with taking a break. Hubs and I had a break in November/December and it was actually really nice to not really think about all we have to do when going through treatment. GL to you.
