DD fell off the bed

I feel so bad! we have been bed-sharing for the second half of the night for 9 months and she always sleeps right near me. Last night she kept trying to climb on me so i scooted her a little farther away. When she rolls around she always rolls closer to me, not farther away, so i have never been worried about her rolling off the side of the bed. Around 3 am i awoke to the sound of her hitting the side of the nightstand. then a few seconds of silence. and then wailing. I jumped up and picked her up off the floor and cuddled her, gave her back her binky, and she stopped crying after about a minute. i dont even think she woke all the way up. seems perfectly fine today. poor thing, i never got bed rails or anything and now i think we will stop bedsharing. i really love sleeping with her but honestly i have missed having my husband in bed (he's been sleeping on the couch). maybe this is the little push i need to start getting her to spend the whole night in her crib. After she fell out of bed i put her in her crib and she woke up at 7:00am happy as could be. didnt cry like she normally does when she wakes up in her crib in the middle of the night. that was a scary feeling though to hear her hit the ground : (

Re: DD fell off the bed

  • Sorry for the scare mama.  It's definitely worth having bed rails for any bed sharing if your bed isn't on the ground.  I'm sure she's fine though!

  • On Pinterest I saw a pool noodle put under the sheet as a bed rail.

  • It sounds like your LO is getting too mobile to bedshare.

Is your husband ok with sleeping on the couch for 9 months?!

  • You could also put the mattress directly on the floor. Your husband doesn't have to sleep somewhere else if your baby is 9 months and can roll/move, there's barely no chance of him rolling on her at this point.

  • We bedshare and DH doesn't sleep on the couch... DD sleeps between us (but like yours, always rolls closer to me)  I wouldn't be comfortable having her on the side, and when DH travels for work I push the bed against the wall.

But, my DD also fell off the bed, at about 5 months old.  Also hit the nightstand, then the floor.  I watched it happen - it was the most sickening thing to see!  My own fault, she was sitting on the bed and I turned away for a second to turn on the fan.   But she was fine, and I'm sure your DD is too. :)

  • DH hasnt slept on the couch the whole nine months, sometimes we all sleep together, but most of the time he sleeps on the couch because then we all have more room to get comfortable and he gets better sleep. he doesnt mind, its only temporary. its not like im kicking him out against his will lol. im not worried about him rolling on her, we just get better sleep this way. we moved the mattress onto the floor last night.
  • We are transitioning our 18 month old DS to a toddler bed right now. He has been sleeping about halfway through the night in it and then getting back into bed with us. He normally sleeps in between us. It was getting to be terrible because he would inch his way around so he was the middle of an "H" between me and DH. We were seriously running out of space! Now that he is in his own bed, he hasn't been moving around as much when he is in our bed *sigh of relief* He really likes snuggling up to his daddy in the morning though... I generally get out of bed before my boys, take a shower, get dressed, and make pancakes or scrambled eggs for all of us :) Unless we have somewhere to be... then it is total chaos and we shovel down some cereal! lol!
  • We moved our mattress to the floor when LO was too mobile for bed rails. That's worked great for us. DH sleeps in the spare room a few nights a week, but we still have some nights in bed together.
