Would this worry you?

My youngest is almost 13 months old.  I have two older children, the 7 y.o. has an Aspergers diagnosis and the 3 y.o. has a PDD-Nos diagnosis.  Obviously we have been watching the baby very closely for signs of ASD.  We had him enrolled in a research study that looked at his development at different intervals, the last time being at 12 months.

At that appointment, there were some really great things happening but there were also some things that could be red flags for ASD.  We have an appointment set up with the Dev. Pedi.  from the study in July, when he will be 18 months old.  She said to call or email if anything concerning comes up in the meantime.

During the past month since we had our appointment, there are several things that have come up that are making me uneasy.

First, language development.  He is adding words at a pace of about 1 word per day.  A lot of people look at me like I am crazy when I say I am worried about this, however, adding language at this rate for a 12/13 month old is atypical language development.  This is very similar to how my oldest developed.  He was speaking in 3+ word sentences by the time he was 15 months old.

Second, I think it was a day or two after our appointment he started head banging.  He does it when he is happy, upset, tired? there really doesn?t seem to be a particular pattern.  The one thing I know for sure is that when you try to redirect, he just does it more. He is banging against the wood floor and will use objects like books or other flat objects to bang on his head.

Last, he has started what I think is visual stimming.  He puts one hand up by his temple and flaps his fingers in front of his eye.  He just started doing this last weekend and it is quickly increasing in frequency and duration.  I haven?t found a pattern for when he is doing this either.

If you were in my shoes, with two older children with ASD, would you be worried enough to call the Dev. Pedi. now? Or am I just off my rocker for worry this much at this point? Do I need to give it more time?

Ugh, this crap is so hard.

    I'd call.

Not because these "red flags" are a slam-dunk proof of an ASD, but because you have a unique access to a specialist so you don't need to worry alone. You're helping them with your particpation, let them help you.

This is a good point.  With our second child so much happened between 12 and 15 months that I think I am on super high alert right now and I am honestly kind of obsessing about every little thing I see.  I am questioning my sanity because, like you said, none of these things are slam dunk proof, they are just little differences.  But you are right, we are helping them, I need to let them help us too.  Thanks for the reassurance.
