3rd Trimester

for those who have had to put together a crib or dresser

How hard it it to put together a crib or dresser?  I'm asking because we have both to put together and wondered if it's doable on my own.  My husband of course can and will but he's been working lots of hours at work and we are also in the process of moving furniture to get new carpet installed so I thought I would help out if I could and put one of them together.  I can follow directions proably better but wasn't sure if my belly would get in the way and it it's too heavy.. Any other ladies do it on your own?

Re: for those who have had to put together a crib or dresser

  • I've built all our dresser in the house on my own and found it pretty easy.

The crib we will be assembling together because it suggests having two people and it think it would be easier to have it all square up.

  • My hubby works alot too...Ive been trying to make his life easier lately...I dont know why but yes, I put the crib together and set it up...and I also rearrange my sons room..including his heavy dresser. I think Im nesting really bad because Im 31 weeks now but when I was 27 weeks I rearranged my whole living room all by myself...including 2 couches with recliners and a tv stand...I know its bad but I am very careful. My hubby comes home all the time and is surprised by what I do. Nowadays its hard for me to do anything...it hurts and I get contractions...so giving my son a shower and unloading groceries takes me a little longer. If you feel like you can do it...then try it and have him double check your work. If its not right then wait for him. I bet you will succeed though!
  • might depend on the crib and dresser - DH did most of the work himself but with both 2 people were needed at points. I probably could have done all the "one" person stuff DH did but he was really excited to put them together so I just did other stuff till he needed a hand.

Maybe get started on the dresser drawers or something and see how it goes?

    GL!

  • Have not done a crib yet, but done a queen size bed. I have assembled most of our furniture, even when DH is around. He sucks at reading and following directions. He calls me the pro of furniture assembly.
  • I put the crib together and it was pretty easy and took just over an hour.  SO put the dresser together while the cat and I supervised and it had a lot more pieces and took a lot longer.  I think it took him about 3 1/2 hours and he's really good at that stuff.  It is about 4 ft tall and has 4 normal sized drawers.
  • I think it just depends how you're feeling. DH and I put our crib up together. I think there were parts that would have been difficult to do by yourself but not impossible. However towards the end I started feeling bad and couldn't even help him hold parts up while he screwed in the bolts. We haven't put the dresser together yet, so we'll see...

  • I pretty much do it all around here. My husband just works too many hours and I enjoy putting things together.

Heck, I even put my kids' bunkbeds together last year on my own. Some parts would be "easier" with 2 people, but most of the stuff is doable by yourself. Look over the instructions and decide if it's something you can do. I just put the dresser we bought together on my own a couple weeks ago and the crib as well.

  • I put our crib together 99% on my own...My husband went through and tightened the screws and bolts...but I think it was fine the way it was, he just needed to added that manly touch to it.

I started the dresser on my own but I couldn't get those weird cam-bolt things to tighten correctly so I called him in to do that part. I also got stuck on the drawer glide things and by that point, he just stayed in the room to help. It was pretty heavy to set up when I got to the last stages

For me, the crib was definitely easier, lighter, and more simple...could be because it had better directions and all of the parts were labeled...the dresser, not so much. You could always start it on your own and if you get stuck, ask for help

  • I don't think putting cribs together is a big deal. I run a daycare and put together 8 cribs plus the one at home. I'm not sure how far along you are so it may be more uncomfortable than it was a month or two ago for me..

  • Depends on teh crib and dresser, but you could do it.  I did the crib on my own.....a word to the wise.....I thought "heck, I'll put it together in the living room so that i can watch TV and do it".  Went to bring it in the bedroom and it wouldn't fit through the door!!  Placenta brain....no one will ever let me live this one down.....

  • I put together the dresser myself, but needed DH to help with the crib.  It was just awkward, and it needed two of us to hold up certain parts.  Like the PP said, assemble the crib in the room as it wont fit through the door frame one assembled.

  • We did the crib together. It didn't take very long.

I suppose doing it alone is possible, but having someone to hold pieces up helped tremendously.

Can't help with the dresser; didn't buy one that needed to be put together.

  • My hubs and I just put our dresser and crib together this past weekend. While I think one person COULD have put them together alone, it would have been much more challenging, especially if that person was 8 months pregnant.I was pretty wiped out after putting each together, and we did one each day.

Two people would be the way to go if you have any choice. Get your husband to help you.
