Success after IF

Constipation

It has been over 24hrs since C has pooped. Now that she is on formula full time I'm worried it might be constipating her. Have I mentioned I'm always worried??? I've done gas drops and gripe water as well as the rectal thermometer. Any other suggestions?

She was a pooping machine on BM and I have two bottles left in the freezer so that's my next step, but it won't be an option for very long. She seems uncomfotable too, cue the non BF guilt, ugh!

Re: Constipation

  • Any change in food can screw up their systems for a day or two.

At that age, DD would go anywhere from zero to four times a day, completely at random since she was on the same formula the whole time.  The pedi said that's totally normal for FF babies.

If she doesn't seem to be in pain, don't worry about it.  If she does seem to be struggling, put one hand over her lower abdomen, below her belly, and apply gentle pressure, sort of rubbing with your fingers a little. If she doesn't pass anything for 48 hours, then it might be worth a call to the pedi.

Also, if the poop finally comes out and it is a hard little nugget, then that is what they consider constipation in a baby that young.  At that point, I would talk to your pedi, but otherwise, just wait it out.

  • Ditto the PP. I've always heard that FF babies poop less often than BF babies. Not because formula is bad - it just gets digested differently. I'd give it a day or two and wait to see if she shows discomfort.
  • Oh don't worry if she hasn't gone for only one day.  As long as she's feeding well and wetting her diaper five or six times a day I wouldn't be too concerned.

  • My LO usually goes about twice a day on formula, but occassionally he will go a day or more...and then he will have a HUGE poop that ends up blowing out a diaper.  So be prepared that when it comes, it will probably be a big one!

This is exactly what I was going to say. Babies digest BM more quickly than formula. As long as LO is not uncomfortable and is wetting diapers I wouldn't worry at all.

  • Something that you might want to add to the bottle that helps move things along us a little probiotics. When DS was on the verge if constipation, a small amount if probiotic gets him back in track.

I'm not sure what formula you are using, but I noticed that DS is having way more BMs on his new formula earths best sensitivity compared to his old similac sensitive. I think the earths best has more whey and is supposed to be more easily digested.

Agreed. My little guys are mostly formula fed with some BM and will go up to two days without a dirty diaper. Wet diapers are very important, so just track those. And, I've always heard the true measure of constipation is texture, not amount (lovely, I know!). Great work on the rectal stimulation with the thermometer. Also, lots and lots of bicycle legs and get things moving as well.
