Babies: 3 - 6 Months

When your babies wake at night....

How many times do they wake up? Mine woke up just twice sine he was 2 months. Then 3 months hit and he started waking 4 times. 4 month wakeful, right? No biggie. About a week ago, he's now 5 months, he increased that to 7 times a night!!! Last night he did his personal best with waking 10 times. There is no point of me even trying to go to bed.

  • I recommend sleep training. It works wonders! Oh and is he teething? Check that first

  • ok so, my baby woke up every 2-3 hours til 2 month old.  Then he went to about 3-3.5 hour stretches.  All the sudden 3 weeks ago he went to 6 hour stretches! I was amazed.  Now for the last 3 nights he is back to 4 hour stretches.  I wonder if it is because of a growth spurt and maybe they just need more to eat.  At 2 months they need the comfort, I completely reject the idea of sleep training this young... it will get better without trying to train your baby.  Do you co-sleep? My baby sleeps with my husband and I in the bed when he wakes up a lot.  It allows me to nurse so much easier and then just lay down with him.  We take all the safety precautions and I keep him between me and toddler rail with no blankets near him.  He started sleeping better when we did that.  Now, we do put him in his crib the first stretch but once he wakes up after 4 hours I move him to the bed with me :)  I love my snuggles with my little man!
  • He was eating three times, then dropped to two (a few times once). The past few weeks he gets up to eat twice and then has been getting up a third time just to be soothed back to sleep :/ he is almost four months and I'm hoping its just a phase.
  • P only wakes up once, knock on wood. He used to wake up twice, but he's never ever woken up more than 3 times. And he only did that once or twice.

I don't know if this helps, but we cluster feed him before bedtime with formula.

Totally normal at this age :) Just what you wanted to hear right?! lol

Actually exactly what I wanted to hear. Lol. I just want to know if its normal or if he's having trouble sleeping.

  • I was at then end of my rope with sleep considering that DD2 is about 4.5 months old and shes always gotten up 2-6 times a night. I started reading Healthy Sleep Habits Healthy Child and its been a huge help so far, even just to understand whats normal and how childrens' sleep develops (Id rec'd it). At 4 months old its completely typical to wake up 4 times with only one or two of those being feedings and the others being a need for soothing. 7 to 10 times is a bit much. He might be ready for sleep training. There are a variety of training options based on what you are comfortable with, but CIO will likely produce the fastest and most long lasting results......decide for yourself.

  • My little one is 19 weeks old and we did the CIO sleep training after our pediatrician said that its about time. So we did. Took us six days of agonizing crying and soothing but it worked wonders.

He now sleeps an eight hour stretch (vs before sleep training, it would only be 4 hours max), wakes up to feed at 6:30 in the morning and then off to sleep for another two hours. The better night sleep comes better naps. We also put him down between 8 and 8:30 each night.

Your little one might be ready for the sleep training. Which ever method you choose, stick with it and don't give in. That will just confuse your child on what to expect.

However, if your little one is sick, that's a different story.
