GTKYP (pet!)

We have two dogs - a Pembroke Corgi named Pongo and a Mini Dauschund named Chase!  We always throught our Corgi would be the protective dog of our future children and would sleep by their bed and be cautious if anyone came around them.  We also always thought we'd have to be careful with our Doxie and really work at training him to be "calm" around the baby.  He's a very friendly dog, always seemed to like kids, but will probably always act like a puppy with high energy and excitement!

Anyway, so when we got home from the hospital with Parker, it was the complete opposite!  Our Doxie was so worried about him every time he cried and so curious about every inch of him that it took him a week to go back to normal eating habits!  He got up with us every night when he cried, checked on him and on us and then would curl up next to me and LO on the rocker and go back to sleep!  Any time someone new came to the house to see/hold DS our doxie would sit right next to them and just watch them to be sure DS was safe!  Now at almost 8 months, they are in seperable! Parker worms up next to him while he's chewing on a bone and plays tug of war with him.  Chase tries to bring his ball to him for DS to throw it and they love giving each other kisses!  It's so cute to watch.

Our corgi is good with him too, just doesn't really care about him until he has a puff!  He'll growl if Parker worms over to him while he's chewing a bone but gets up and takes the bone elsewhere.  He'll come up and give him a kiss and then look at us like, "There I like him, ok?"  It's just weird how they took on opposite roles from what we expected!

Here are some pictures!!

Re: GTKYP (pet!)

  • We also have two dogs: a black lab and a medium-sized mixed breed. I try to take DS outside to see them several times a week b/c he is fascinated by them. The lab is generally very boisterous, and he loves to snuffle DS's hands and feet. DS thinks this is hilarious and gives the best belly laughs when it happens. The mixed breed is very timid (I think she was abused before I adopted her), so she watches DS from afar. If I sit down on the truck bumper and put DS on my knees, she will come over for me to pet her and sniffs DS's hand when he reaches for her. I am still a bit nervous to let her get too close to DS in case she ever gets aggressive out of anxiety. She has no history of aggression other than barking like a crazy at people she sees through the fence, so hopefully they'll get to be buddies. DS is of course fascinated by her and will often watch her as she sits at a distance while the lab is bouncing up and down trying for all the world to get DS's attention.

  • Looks like we have a few doxie owners in our group.  We have two senior dachshunds.  The 14 year old is pretty much only interested in the kids when there is food involved.  Our 10 year old is more playful and loves to snuggle up with the kids.

  • We have two English Springers and a cat. All are very good with him. DS jumps on the cat and she just looks mildly disinterested. We are working on "be nice to the kitty" and "pet the puppies softly like this" its a work in progress. We also have a family farm so DS chasing piglets around this summer is something I can't wait for. It will still be a few years before we introduce him to the cows and calfs. They are stupid clumsy animals no matter what you do to try and tame them.
  • We have a cat. He has these big blunt claws that couldn't hurt anything if he tried. He also has a bad mouth and only have 5 teeth left and has never bitten anything... including food. So we feel comfortable letting DS chase him around. The cat is the best toy and his favorite thing. He is not very gentle yet and tends to grab handfuls of fur and go straight for his face. The cat food is also a fun toy... of course.

That is too cute!  I'm sure it will be a blast to watch... I want Parker to chase some piglets!!

  • We have a boxer named Roo who seems to think LO is her baby. I guess we were just the surrogate parents. She LOVES him. Always kissing him, watching over him. If anyone walks by on the sidewalk outside our house, she is growling at the front door. No one is coming to get her baby! Especially that shady looking old lady walking her tiny dog. LOL. We also have a cat named Cookie. She wants absolutely nothing to do with the baby. Even though he practically stands on his head to get her attention and laughs at her. For some reason, the sight of her is really funny to him.

  • We have 2 minidoxies, a chocolate lab, and a cat. The cat is 7 and stays on her own side of the house because she never warmed up to the dogs. Girl doxie Bella is 2 1/2, boy doxie Maverick is 2, and lab Dexter is 1 1/2. All of the animals are so awesome with DS! I was also a little worried about the doxies while pregnant, but they've been a pleasant surprise and just love giving him kisses. I only let them around while DH or I are holding DS. We either put them outside or in another room while DS is on the floor. We only let DS on the floor in the living room anyway cuz it's the only room in the house with carpet. So anyway we haven't had to worry about DS being too rough or vice versa.

We usually let DS pet the kitty on our bed //totally supervised of course!!//, and she loves him too. He's fascinated with trying to put her tail or paw in his mouth. She isn't declawed but she's so gentle with him.

  • We have a chihuahua, Toby, doxie mix, Preston, and kitty, Pirate.  They all like Ethan, especially Preston and Pirate.  They have to follow Ethan around, get worried when he cries, and are so good about being gentle with him even when he pulls on them.  Ethan loves to watch them run around and play.  He crawls up to the boys and giggles like crazy if he is able to grab them.
