Crampy?

I've been getting bouts of extreme crampiness, like what you feel when you start your period. Sometimes it's in my back as well. Does anyone know he significance of this? They are definitely not contractions because I know what those feel like. I know labor is approaching but this has been going on for almost a week now and it's getting annoying!

Re: Crampy?

  • They actually can be Braxton-Hicks. This is how I've been experiencing them. I asked my midwife about it since all the mommas in my birth class experienced the upper or whole uterine contractions and I only had "period cramps." She said all is normal and most likely BHC.

  • I've been getting this but mostly in the middle of the night.  It definitely doesn't feel like contractions cause there is no tightening with it but it hurts!  Wish it was something.

  • Oh I should have said I have BH as well, my whole stomach gets very tight, those have been going on for a while now but this is different. I have been dilating and effacing but full blown active labor has not started, it's like I'm in limbo! I also cramp more at night, PP! After I peed in the middle of the night last night I had some intense cramping for about a half hour or so, then it just stopped. So weird!

  • I've had these cramps for over a month now. I am dilated and effaced pretty well already but no changes in terms of cramps and contractions.

  • This is my first time going through this, but my understanding is that an early sign of labor is menstrual like cramping and also the lower back ache.  Contractions has been described to me as menstrual like back pain that starts in the back and goes to the front as the contractions get worse, the cramping feeling gets worse.  I have been on bedrest and procardia for 5 weeks for pre term labor and have had the cramping for the last few weeks...now that I am off bedrest and the medication, the cramping is getting progressively worse and my doctor said to let her know when it gets worse (rated a 6 in pain) because I am most likely in labor.

Interesting! I think I've been in prodromal labor for the past week, it's really getting irritating. When I went into labor with DD, the contractions felt like a very strong period cramp, but it was a distinct cramp that would start slow, peak, and then resolve. It wasn't this general crampy feeling like this.

  • Ya I completely lost with all this- I just wish there was an alarm telling me I was in labor!  I am also 90% effaced (took me a few weeks to get to that), so maybe constant cramping is the cervix softening or dilating or both?

  • I've been cramping too and it is mostly at night.  My doctor told me to drink more water and rest when it happens.  It's been happening for a few weeks now.  They feel just like period cramps and then go away.  They are mostly in my back.

  • I just posted this yesterday! Lol I too have been having them for days, and mine are stronger at night as well. I guess just a sign of progression, and that we are nearing the end! :
  • Yep. I'm crampy as well and I notice it more if my bladder is full. But when I go to the bathroom and release, it cramps a little right after as well so I don't know what is causing the crampiness. I notice it every two ours that I get up to pee throughout the night.
  • I had these last night. Cramping.  I knew they were bh.  They did not get painful, but more uncomfortable than anything else. My mil just told me to watch that they don't get more painful and if they do, call my Doctor to see if they want me to do anything. It felt a bit like period cramps to me, but again, it was different cause they weren't painful, just uncomfortable.
  • I had cramps like this that started last night. They're mostly on the right side of my body, and feel just like period cramps. They seem to get better when I get up and walk around a little bit. Probably BH contractions, but up until yesterday I only felt painless tightening in my upper belly, so I didn't know what they were!
