? re: induction with cervidil...

i am hoping to hear from some of you who were administered cervidil due to lack of effacement. ?since 36w, i have been 1cm dilated and 50% effaced. ?at my appointment today, my doctor and i discussed that if i don't labor on my own in the next week, i will have to schedule an induction for the 16th or some time after.

i'm very nervous about the lack of progress my body has made and realize that this could mean a greater risk of having a c/s. ?can you tell me about your labor experience if you were given cervidil? ?i'm hoping there are some successful induction stories as i'm really hoping to avoid a c/s... i do realize that the baby has to come out somehow and i'd prefer a healthy baby over anything... but just was looking for someone to ease my mind.

thanks!?

  • I was induced and was BEGGING for a c-section after 20+ hours....i know i can't really help you out, but I just wanted to say that i LOVED the c-section and will definitely get it next time.  It's really not that bad

    good luck!!

  • Don't stress about it. Seriously.  I wanted a natural birth. I ended up going into labor on my own, after worrying and worrying I would need an induction because of GD.  And you know what?? After I went into labor ON MY OWN, my water broke ON IT'S OWN, and I pushed for 4 hours, I still ended up with a c/s due to a cord wrapped around the neck and an a-cephalic (sunny side up) baby.

If I could get all those moments of worrying about my possible induction, and also about how my birth would go, BACK, I would in a heartbeat. Enjoy these last days of being pregnant and enjoy your silence too.  Don't worry about this kind of stuff. TRUST ME.  You will hate yourself for it later.

  • I am being completely honest here...being induced with cervidil was the most horrid experience for me EVER. They did 2 rounds of it because each time it would make my contractions so rapid I was in the most horrid pain, I would have maybe 10-15 between each contraction, I only lasted about 3 hours each time they put it in because they didn't want to put the baby at risk. I ended in a c/s
  • Here is my birth story with Cervadil:

I was scheduled to be induced on Sunday night, around 11pm on Saturday I started having contractions.  We had an appointment Friday with no progress, so it was quite a shock (and my doc was out of town!) We got to the hospital around 1:30am and the contractions were 3 minutes apart.  The admitted me and administered Nubane (best.pain.medication.ever).  I slept until 6 or 7am and we met with the on-call doctor for my practice.  He said my doctor was on her way back into town and we should adminster the Cervadil since my contractions had slowed because of the pain medication.  At 9am they  gave me the Cervadil and said to plan to deliver in 12 to 24 hours. As soon as the medicine took, my contractions intensified and I felt the insane need to push.  I told (screamed) the nurse what I was feeling and she called the anestheologist in to give me the epidural.  I could not stop the urge to push and the contractions were on top of each other.  I was fully dilated and ready to deliver, so I chose to go forward with no epidural.  The oncall doctor from my practice didn't even make it in time, so the random on call doc at the hospital delivered her.  No epidural turned out to be a blessing in disguise, recovery has been relatively easy.Finley Anne arrived at 9:26 am and she is perfect!  It was way easier than I ever thought it would be and I am so thrilled to have her in my arms.

  • I was 50% dilated and 1 cm when I was induced due to pre-e.  I had done a ton of research in induction and was convinced I would end up with a c-section since my cervix wasn't favorable.  Luckily, the cervidil worked wonderfully and I ended up with a 7 hour labor with no need for pitocin.  It's not always the norm, but inductions can be successful.
  • I guess I am in the minority b/c it wasn't bad at all for me.  I was induced on a Sunday at 7.  I was still only 1cm and at about 60%.  I had off and on contractions up until them but after they put the cervadil in I had constant contractions all night.  I woke up at 5:30am and my water had broke on its own.  I was very happy b/c the doc was coming in to break it if it hadn't.  The doc came in at 7 and I was at about a 3.  They administered a very low dose of pitocin b/c I asked that I be able to progress w/o a huge amount of pitocin.  By 11 they had uped the drip b/c I wan't progressing.  By 12 I was at a 4 and in some serious pain.  I got the epi and by 5:15 I was at a 10.  After about 3hrs of pushing the doc said we need to get her out for your sake and hers.  He said we can vacuum her out or we need to get you into the OR.  I said vacuum her out!  I didn't push that long and be in labor that long to have a Csect.  I knew if she didn't come out then I would be wheeled in but I wanted her out.  I gave two good pushes and she was out.  She is healthy as can be.  I would say it was as good as it could be for being in labor so long.
  • Hey Megs just wanted to say good luck!
  • I personally feel that all inductions are successful because you end up with a baby no matter what in the end.

Mine was alright for the first 36 hours, but after that I began to come to terms with a c/s.  I was in labor for 48 hours.  I would prepare for the worst and hope for the best.   However I did learn after my c/s that it was very unlikely that DS was ever going come on his own.

  • I was induced at 40 weeks 5 days. I had a feeling he wasn't coming on his own. They said he wasn't huge (measured normal on my belly but not on u/s....on u/s he measured 2 wks ahead but they didn't WORRY about that. I think if I was induced early (38 weeks possibly) I wouldnt have had to have a c section. I actually had a great birth with a C section...so I'm okay with it. I was induced....and I was on cervadil overnight (6-6am). Nothing happened. I stayed at 1 1/2 cm which I had been at since 38 weeks. They decided to start on pit...and after 8 1/2 hours of pit they told me I was still at 1 1/2. He was just big and didn't want to descend. So...they said i could either 1. go home *(yeah right)...2. start fresh in the morning with more pitocin or 2. have a c section. i said...cut me open now i want him out!.....It was hard once I had to get up and pee...but after that it was a lot better. It took a good 2 weeks to feel physically better...but he was such a joy I barely thought about the pain! (and I'm a wimp). You can do it! It's okay to be induced...it's so common especially if it's your first! you will be so happy to have your sweet baby in your arms...congrats!
  • My SIL was induced with cervidil (sp?) a few nights ago. She was 100% effaced, 1 cm dilated and ended up with a c-section after spending all day in labor (I can't remember how many hours...) because the baby was in an awkward position and not pushing on her cervix.

I had the same problem (the awkward position) but I waited it out with no induction. I went into labor naturally at 41w6d and was in labor for 2 days before her head straightened out... 15 hours after that I delivered DD vaginally.

I think we both had crappy L&D because of the babys' positions, but honestly, I'd take my delivery over hers any day. She also had a crappy OB and I think her C could have been avoided by a better doctor.

Good luck with whatever you choose! In the end your DC will be here and it will have all been worth it. C-section, vaginal, medicated, or unmedicated... it all ends with your LO being here. :)

  • I was induced on my due date for various reasons. When I got to the hospital I was 1cm. They put the cervadil and within 4 hrs I was having regular contractions. Everything went really smoothly from then on. Got the epi, dr broke my water and started a bit of pitocin. Withing 2 hrs I was 10cm, I pushed for about an hour and got my beautiful baby boy. I know I am very lucky, and it was a great experience.

    Good luck!

  • I was 39 weeks and had made no progress at all.  My Baby was 9.5 lbs.  so, they offered to induce, but gave me only a 20% chance of delivering vaginally.  He was concerned about me trying and then having a C after tired and worn out.  I ended up having the C the next morning.  We are both good and it was not nearly as bad as I was afraid.  We are both great, which was the importan part in my opinion.

  • My water broke but I did not experience any contractions and I was only 1cm dialated. They gave me cervadil to start the process. I guess I didn't realize that I was basically induced due to my water breaking. The dr didn't mention anything about a c/s, so not sure about that.

  • I had cervidil then pitocin. I was induced at 39 weeks with no dilation or ?effacement after failing my non-stress test. I did not have a c/s and I have an awesome DS .?
  • I was induced at 38 weeks due to PIH.  Cervidil was started on a Wednesday evening (hurt like crazy going in) then Pitocin the next morning.  The Cervidil actually started my contractions in the wee hours of the morning.  I had a wonderful induction experience.  DD was born vaginally early Thursday afternoon.  Good luck!
  • I was induced at 41w due to low fluid.  The cervidil kicked me into labor and I never needed pitocin.  I did not need a c-section.  I was in labor for about 12hrs.

Successful inductions do happen!  Wishing that for you!

  • Cervadil brought on the back labor for me. Gave me about an inch. Unsuccessful induction. Good luck.
  • I was in a similar situation and was terrified that I would have to have a c-section but it worked out well! I was induced at 39 weeks due to pre-e and had been fingertip and 50% effaced for a couple of weeks. I got the cervadil at about 6pm and started having mild contractions overnight. I was still  fingertip and 50% in the morning, around 5am and they started pitocin around 6am. At 9am I was 1 cm and my ob broke my water; at that point I was mentally preparing myself for a c-section as I was having such little progress. I got the epidural around 10am because the contractions worsened after my water was broken. Then, very happily, around 1pm, I was 2cm and 80% effaced and things just took off from there. I had my baby girl at 1120pm vaginally without any further complications. So you can have a vaginal delivery even though things don't look so favorable initially! And I just kept reminding myself that the most important thing in the end is a healthy mom and baby. Good luck!
