I apologize if this has been utterly beaten to death, considering the vast amount of posts I see about babywearing/woven wraps/carriers, etc...
I was wondering if anyone had any experience with baby wearing with a flat, twin-sized, cotton bed sheet. I found a few articles and tutorials on the how's, and my budget explains the why's , but I was wondering if anyone had any personal experience they'd like to share. Such as... Did you love it? Did you hate it? Did you just tolerate it until you could find a "real" wrap? Is twin-sized way too small? Would queen-sized be too big?
Any/all input would be much appreciated!
Re: Babywearing / wrapping with a bed sheet
Lurker, but since twin and queen sheets are the same length, I don't think it would matter. My concern would be the width. It's hard to mange extra width in a wrap and it can make it uncomfortable for mama and baby.
Im not sure of your budget constraints, but I made a "woven" from 5 yards of Osnaburg fabric that I bought at Walmart for $2/yard, so $10 total. All I did was trim it (the fabric was originally 44 inches wide and I wanted it to be 30) and them hem the edges. So for ten bucks and an hour at the sewing machine I got a wrap that I used every day for ~10 months with DS1 and sporadically thereafter, and it's still in great shape for DS2.
Can I just "derp" myself really quickly for the bolded? lol Thanks for pointing that out. Seriously. I'm pulling the pregnancy brain card...
I might have to look into buying some fabric. I am just paranoid about getting something too weak or floppy. Thanks for the tip!
I think there are better options that aren't going to cost that much more. It is doable but the fabric won't be that comfortable and as has been pointed out it's really short for most wrap carries.
Osnaburg is a good cheap DIY option. Tablecloths can also be a cheap wrap although you will only be able to get a shorty wrap.
You can get a MT or ring sling for $30 or less as well (the infantino MT or a sleeping baby productions RS). If you sew, you can make your own of those too. I have some DIY links and info on my blog in my siggy if you want more info on selecting fabrics.

I just gave in and bought a Storch Leo Cafe. I saw it weeks ago, and it just wouldn't let me go! I'm on a budget, too, but this was the one item that I really wanted. I'm not crafty at all, so knowing that I have a sturdy, well-reviewed item for baby makes it worth it.
I would check Craigslist, but I also recommend watching out on eBay. Plus, there are many different babywearing swap/FSOT groups. I'm a complete newbie, so I'm sure other people have greater knowledge of this-- I have been lurking with thebabywearer.com, the Facebook "babywearing swap" group, and diaperswappers.com. I didn't have any luck finding what I wanted, but that is because I got impatient. And picky. I saw someone posting a Storch Albert size 4.1 for $40. I found someone on Craigslist selling a Didy Indio for $60. If you keep looking, you can find nice items for decent prices.
This. I did it with my son and it worked like a charm and gave the second to my sister for my nephew, she loved it and her son loved it. I still have mine and I plan on reusing it. The best part was no sewing because I am terrible with that.
