Freezing Breastmilk

Also posted this in Breastfeeding, but wanted a little more input from a eco-friendly viewpoint...

Help! I didn't freeze a whole lot of breastmilk with my first and am looking for a good system with #2. I have a Philips Avent pump and considered just using their plastic breastmilk cups, but I had an issue with one of them never opening after being frozen. Soooo... looking for something else. I'm not keen on plastic storage bags. I am mainly looking at the breastmilk trays. Any recommendations?

TIA!

Re: Freezing Breastmilk

  • You could always use an ice cube tray and then transfer to another container.  Usually each cube is about 1 tablespoon.  Problem with that method is that you can't accurately keep track of the date.

  • I freeze in glass bottles. I have about 50 of the Evenflo ones. They are cheap and I don't do plastic.
  • If you are going for more EF and less toxic (plastic) then glass bottles or silicon trays is your best option. If you want a better system is terms of convenience and space, stacked plastic bags is what works best.
  • Thank you all! I was recommended the Fresh Baby food/breastmilk freezing trays and Honeysuckle breastmilk bags over on the breastfeeding board. I will probably go with the trays and get more glass bottles. I ordered a Philips Avent glass bottle for feeding, but they are a bit pricey compared with other ones. I may just use them for feeding and get other ones for storage/defrosting! I will probably look for some aluminum storage containers for the breastmilk cubes :)

On a different note, I am seriously getting rid of my plastic food storage containers this week and getting a bunch of glass! Plus I have LifeFactory bottles coming in for myself, DH, and DS! Super excited!

  • I ended up ordering the Fresh Baby freezing trays and Green Sprouts has a very cool glass storage system that I am excited about trying! It comes with trays that you can stack and each glass container can hold up to 2 oz. of baby food/breastmilk. I got one set to try out at first, but I am sure I will get more so I can stack them!

I had also ordered my DS a Life Factory baby bottle and he is absolutely in love with the thing! He keeps trying to attack the bright blue bottle I got myself, so I might have to upgrade from the green to the blue for him :) I was a little concerned about spending a bunch of money to get several of the bottles for DD once she is here, but I am so pleased with the quality of the Life Factory bottles that I will definitely be buying some more! I had also ordered a glass Philips Avent Natural bottle and it is pretty nice, but having that silicone sleeve on the bottles really helps!

So that is my solution to being a bit more green this time around :)
