Using a name you like but don't love?

For mobile users: using a name you like but don't love?

DH and I are having a very difficult time finding a name for DD.  The one name I truly adore, Felicity, DH vetoed.  We've other discussed names and although I like them, I don't love them. Did anyone ending up using a name you liked instead of a name you loved? Have you grown to love it?

ETA: I think it has been harder because we decided on DS's name quickly and easily. We both loved it and knew what it would be as soon as we found out he was a boy.  I'm worried I won't feel the same way about her name since it has taken longer to find one.

  • Interesting question.  I don't have children yet, but I'm curious to see the responses.  DH and I have some names that we agree on, but others I feel more strongly about than he does and vice versa.

  • That's funny, my number one was Felicity as well and Dh said no. We kept looking until we found one that we both really liked, and it helped me that it had the same ending sound. Even though I loved Felicity for years, now I can't picture my daughter as anything but Ainsley- it suits her well! Big Smile

My opinion is, no matter what you choose, once it is on the baby you love, you will love it, even if you only really liked it to start with.

  • Honestly, if this baby is a boy, I'm pretty sure that's going to be what happens. We're really close and any name I love DH doesn't. So we're basically going to have to agree on a name we both think is okay unless something miraculous happens.
  • I'm interested to see responses as well. Picking names for our first was easy. We both loved Norah. Now that I'm KU again, we're using the same boy name but cannot agree on any girl names. I have several that I love and DH doesn't like any of them. He has chosen one name and I hate it. I have no idea what we're going to do!

  • I really wanted to use Penelope for my daughter who is now Josephine. I didn't love Josephine, it's still not one of my favorite names. I mean I like it and love it on her, and it fits her very well. But I LOVE Penelope and he still won't let me use it for a future baby. I'm actually trying to get him to Consider Nella now, since if we would have used Penelope we may have called her Nellie or Nelle

  • If this baby is a boy, he'll be Anthony which I like but don't love. DH really wants to name the baby after his grandfather and I'm totally on board with that. It helps that even though it's not my favorite name, I adore DH's grandpa.
  • DH vetoed the one boy name I absolutely love. I have a hard time with boy names so almost everything else falls in the it's ok or dislike category. We did find some names I thought were cool and the one we've settled on I'm growing to love.

I was trying to figure out how to say that.  Agree wholeheartedly!

Good point!  I hope that is the case for me :)

  • This might end up being us. We have it narrowed down to 4 names for DS2 but aren't in love with any of them yet. DH definitely has a favorite but its borderline too popular for me so I'm really hesitant but I haven't been able to commit to anything else yet. DH suggested taking them all to the hospital but I'm hoping one will jump out before then. We didn't name DS1 until I was 36 weeks tho so I guess its not uncommon for us to struggle, especially with boy names.

  • I think it's ok to use a name that you just "like". I just "like" DD's formal name, but I love her nick name. It was a compromise with DH.

  • Honestly, when I was pregnant with my son, I was not completely sold on Oliver. I had previously always thought the name was fine but nothing terrific. There were other names I loved much more... my favorite being Noble and H nixed it right away. He was in love with Oliver and I truly ended up giving in to an extent. I didn't mind the name per se it just was not at the top of my list. Now, almost 10 years later, I am completely in love with it. His name fits him perfectly and I have never regretted my choice :)

  • We had it narrowed down to a short list and waited to decide after we met our daughter. We agreed the next day in the hospital as we filled out her birth certificate.
I also agree with the PP who said you will love the name on your child. We are pregnant with our second and talking about names again. Even though I still like most of the names we considered the first time, I can't imagine our daughter by any other name.
We're starting the name search semifresh this time, but it is interesting to see how we feel about all the names we talked about last time.
  • With DS we both had a different name that we loved and neither one of us really wanted to go to the other's name.  We ended up with a name we both liked and I think it's the right name for him now.  I'm over the name I loved and now I'm willing to consider DH's favorite for this baby if we have a boy.
  • With DD1, we used a name that DH loved and I liked, because it was his grandmother's name and meant a lot to him. This time around, I get #1 vote (as long as he likes it) so hopefully it will be a name I love. Oddly enough I love her name now and am so glad we chose it. It has meant a lot to our family and really fits her.
    Waiting for #3!

  • DD's name (Elsa) is something that DH loved and I liked.  I compromised because I had a lot of input into DS's name.  Now that DD's here, it's perfect and I can't imagine her being any other name.

  • My son's name is Ethan, and while it was on our list, it was not my favorite. Wasn't even in my top 3. When we saw him for the first time DH said, "I think he's an Ethan" and I agreed. I still only "like" his name, but his name perfectly fits him and I cannot imagine him being called anything else.

  • If this baby is a girl, we will be in the situation.  We cannot agree on a name we both love.  We both love our boy choice, but not any girl choices.

  • I think you will grow to love it. My fianc? and I had a very hard time choosing a name. He likes more plain Jane and simple,  and I prefer unisex and unique.  I refused anything super popular right now. But he insisted we used Olivia in honor of someone very special to him. We named her Madelyn Olivia. I only liked Madelyn, but it was the only name we could agree on that flowed with Olivia.

But now I couldn't imagine her having any other name. It grew on me.  :)

Agree. I loved the name Vivienne and I am still pushing for it but he hates it. We picked Ivy and I love her name and it fits her but I still wish I could've had a Vivienne.
